Position Summary:Position Summary:
The Learning Specialist provides support and planning to the STEM Learning Center and learning support to students. Support services may include tutoring, academic coaching, leading supplemental instruction/embedded tutoring sessions or study skills workshops, making referrals to campus resources, and assisting with staff training and Learning Center daily operations. Learning Specialists use varying styles and approaches that reflect an understanding and acceptance of the role of culture in a diverse, multicultural workplace.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
The following are the functions essential to performing this job:1. Assist the STEM Learning Center Coordinator with organizing and leading staff training, on campus and online, to include research on innovative techniques, pedagogy, and metacognition.2. Assist the STEM Learning Center Coordinator with daily operations of the learning center, as needed, including opening and closing the Center, data-collections, matching students with staff.3. Assist the STEM Learning Center Coordinator with planning of services and materials for the learning center, as needed.4. Tutor students individually, in small groups, or embedded in courses. Sessions may be held on campus or online.5. Engage and encourage students to become confident, successful, and active learners by responding to the diversity of their cultural backgrounds, academic needs, and learning styles.6. Coach students in academic study skills, STEM research processes, and other STEM learning strategies.7. Design and/or lead in-class presentations, learning center orientations, supplemental instruction or review sessions, and/or study skills workshops.8. Encourage communication between student and instructor; refer students to other campus student support services, as needed.9. Provide technical/software support to students, as needed.10. Assist the STEM Learning Center Coordinator with researching and updating learning center materials and resources, as requested.11. Perform record-keeping and administrative tasks as directed.12. Performs other duties as assigned.
1. Master’s Degree in Mathematics, Statistics, Biology, Chemistry, or related STEM field OR Ten (10) years+ tutoring experience in a college environment.2. Two (2) years prior successful employment
Desired Qualifications:1. Experience teaching and/or tutoring2. Successful completion of a tutor training program3. Familiarity with the community college environment4. Excellent verbal and written communication skills5. Experience using Office 365/Microsoft Office6. Experience using Blackboard Learning Management System (LMS)
Work Schedule:9:00-2:00 Monday to Thursday (Morning) OR2:00-7:00 Monday to Thursday (Evening) OR12:00-5:00 Wednesday & Thursday; 11:00-4:00 Friday & Saturday (Weekend)
All shifts may work evenings and weekends as needed during the Academic Year. Hours will shift per STEM Center schedule.
