The Historic East Baltimore Community Action Coalition (HEBCAC) is seeking a part-time GED Instructor to facilitate a non-traditional, innovative, and comprehensive system of PRE- GED and GED Ready educational services for Baltimore City youth ages 18 to 24 participating in the Youth Opportunity (YO!) Center. This position will develop and deliver ABE basic, general education and/or Pre-GED/ GED classed to youths at varying levels of subject mastery. This is teaching work at the full performance level.


Since 2000, the YO! Program has provided comprehensive services to out-of-school youth ages 18 to 24 and moves them to economic independence. Committed instructors lead classes so youth can get their high school equivalency certificates (GEDs) and then connect to high-growth careers. Advocates make referrals to supportive social services and offer leadership development opportunities.


                Specific Duties & Responsibilities

                • Prepare course outlines and lesson plans.

                  • Engage youth with assignments/projects by which "fun-learning" simultaneously occurs.

                    • Independently select and use teaching methods, techniques, and supplemental material that will be most effective for teaching the assigned subjects to program participants.

                      • Initiate, design, and carry out individualized programs of learning adjusted to the needs of individual students, or small groups of students who are having special learning difficulties.

                        • Consult with counselors and other team members in the design and development of programs to overcome specific educational needs.

                          • Counsel and advise students, parents, guardians, or others concerned with the educational attainment of students.

                            • Must be able to implement instruction virtually as needed.


                              Additional Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

                              • Knowledge of special teaching principles, methods, and techniques applicable to subject and target groups.
                              • Knowledge of principles, methods and techniques of educational and psychological tests and their application to counseling and of the broad objectives and content of educational and training programs.
                              • Ability to obtain and interpret occupational, economic, and other data about the environments affecting the students.
                              • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, demonstrating tact and diplomacy to consistently interact effectively and flexibly with diverse groups of people including executive management, staff, and the public.
                              • An understanding of application and experience utilizing Trauma Informed Care, cultural effectiveness, motivational interviewing and other evidence based related practices.
                              • Effective practical knowledge of working with youth populations including, but not limited to, youth who experience some level of homelessness, formerly incarcerated/ returning citizen(s) youth, LGBTQIA+ identified youth, foster care youth and expecting/ parenting youth.
                              • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
                              • Ability to work as a member of a team to ensure project completion.


                              Minimum Qualifications
                              • Bachelor's Degree in Education, Early Childhood Education, Social Work or related field.
                              • Minimum of two years related experience.
                              • Some experience working with youth populations providing comparable services.


                              Preferred Qualifications
                              • Professional teaching certificate.
                              • Experience in classroom instruction.
                              • One year experience working with historically disadvantaged populations.

                              Starting Salary Range: $21.25 - $36.90 HRLY ($19,638 targeted; Commensurate with experience)
