The Department of Global Development Studies (GDS) is the administrative home of our excellent International Development Studies (IDS) programs, now celebrating its 30th anniversary. The GDS community is committed to teaching and research in development studies that contribute to an understanding and mitigation of processes, policies, and practices that reproduce conditions of poverty, inequality, and oppression around the world.

Our approach is 'critical', grounded in historically-informed cross-disciplinary research, pedagogy, and dialogue with a central focus on the poor and less powerful majority who find themselves most adversely affected by exclusionary power relations and practices. Your opportunity:

In order to advance the program objectives of the Department of Global Development Studies (GDS), we are recruiting for the Program Manager, International Development Studies Co-op who can demonstrate commitment to the success of the academic department, and passion in student success by enhancing the student’s university experience in a culturally diverse environment.

Reporting directly to the Chair, DGDS, the Program Manager, International Development Studies Co-op is responsible for designing, implementing, and evaluating all non-academic programmatic aspects of the International Development Studies (IDS) Co-op Program. The main areas of responsibility include student programming specifically for co-op, internships and placements, student safety and well-being, employer development, student recruitment and admissions, scholarships, and internal/external communications and relations.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Supports student work-integrated learning activities by planning and implementing components of curricular and/or co-curricular programs and activities
  • Acting as the first point of contact for program-related enquiries and advises students through their own process of career development by providing options and consequences incorporating personal circumstances impacting academic success and an understanding of an individual's background
  • Implementing plans and process improvements for program policies and service activities by keeping well-informed on best practices for developing student placement and work-integrated learning opportunities
  • Tracking and monitoring information that affects the safety and security of others travelling abroad
  • Leads seminars and workshops and determines logistical details and activities for various events and/or programming, including management of scholarships and connections with current and prospective coop placement partners
  • Manages administration of the IDS Coop Program by creating and updating records, generating and writing various reports, verifying the accuracy and completeness of information, and managing the dissemination of student scholarships, including scholarship report writing, in consultation with Business Officer
  • Liaise with stakeholders to support initiative and ensures contracts and agreements are consistent with University standards and guidelines
  • Supervises one staff member (IDS Coop Program Coordinator)

Essential Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree or acceptable combination of equivalent experience.
  • Minimum of 5 years of related experience in the administration of co-operative educational programming, advising, facilitating, career development and/or non-profit sector; including at least two years of experience in international development work.
  • Must have excellent negotiation, conflict resolution, and emergency management skills
  • Results-orientation and time-management skills with the ability to set priorities and meet deadline
  • Highly developed presentation, verbal, and written communication skills
  • Strong computer skills with working knowledge of MSWord, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, web editing software, relational databases, and the Internet
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with a wide variety of people at different levels of the University and with external stakeholders
  • Excellent problem solving and analytical skills, with demonstrated ability to make decisions in a fast-paced, dynamic environment
  • Professional demeanor with a sensitivity to confidential matters
  • Demonstrated evidence of leadership with the ability to provide guidance and direction
  • Must show evidence of a commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and the promotion of a respectful and collegial learning and working environment
