Pay Range: $15.95 - $20.31 and determined based on relevant years of work experience.

Position Summary:

  • The lab aide will have the following duties:
  • Assist in chemical prep for labs
  • Assist in setup and dismantling of labs, along with the collection and orderly storage of chemicals and labware
  • Assist in setting up equipment and small instruments
  • Replenish consumables (such as paper towels, weigh boats, soap, gloves, etc) for labs on a daily basis
  • Assist in inventory of chemicals and equipment
  • Perform any additional duties as requested by the lab coordinator

Required Qualifications:

  • Needs to have at least one college level chemistry class
  • Good oral and communication skills
  • Good organizational skills
  • Good time management and multi-tasking skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • AA or higher degree in Environmental Science, Geology or Physical Geography with successful completion of lab coursework.

Position Details: Job duties include but are not limited to:

  • Assist students in the open lab, which provides time for students to enhance their learning that has occurred in the formal classroom setting.
  • Provide guidance and direction to students. Assist students with questions and concerns related to the lab activities.
  • Provide a safe study environment for the students.
  • Monitor conditions and activities in lab areas and enforce lab policies. - (Essential)
  • Check students in and out of the lab. Ensure they are following the rules of the lab and keep track of any materials being checked out.
  • Maintain security of the lab and its contents. Remain aware of surroundings to ensure the open lab is a safe and healthy environment.
  • Organize the lab and classrooms and their contents in between semesters. Ensure the lab is clean, organized, and sanitized after each class, including proper disposal of waste materials and cleaning laboratory equipment.
  • Provide assistance that supports instructional needs to faculty and support staff.
  • Set up the lab for scheduled classes. Ensure students have the materials and equipment needed for class and lab use. Maintain and calibrate equipment.
  • Assist with the inventory of materials within the lab and classrooms. Organize laboratory items, materials, and equipment. Ensure proper labeling of materials.
  • Enforce and promote safety protocols, including the proper use of safety equipment and the disposal of hazardous materials.
  • Maintain departmental compliance with local, state, and federal safety regulations and JCCC policies.

Working at Johnson County Community College

With more than 34,000 students enrolled in credit and continuing education classes each semester, Johnson County Community College is the state's third largest institution of higher education and the largest of its 19 community colleges.

JCCC offers a full range of undergraduate credit courses that form the first two years of most college curricula. The college has more than 100 transfer agreements with area colleges and universities that ensure admittance to specific programs such as business, engineering and education. JCCC students are able to begin their first two years of a four-year degree program here and complete that degree on schedule.

In addition, more than 50 one- and two-year career and certificate programs prepare students to enter the job market in high-employment fields. The college maintains extensive student support services such as computer labs, math labs, a writing center and a learning center.

JCCC’s continuing education program is the largest, most comprehensive in the Kansas City area. Through the Center for Business and Technology, participants can take courses in management and computer application or seminars and workshops that lead to professional certification and licensure. Personal enrichment classes, on topics ranging from gardening to money management, are also offered, while nationally and internationally performing and visual artists appear in the performance spaces and Gallery of Art in JCCC’s Carlsen Center.

The campus, centrally located in the county on 234 acres, opened in 1972. There are 18 major buildings on campus. Currently under construction are the Regnier Center and the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art.

JCCC’s full-time faculty and staff numbers about 875. Another 1,800 people work as adjunct faculty or part-time staff. Most faculty members have master’s degrees, and many have or are earning doctorates.
