School of Medicine, Pediatric Emergency Medicine is seeking a Community Health Worker (CHW). The CHW will have background knowledge of health promotion in pediatric populations and feel comfortable working in school settings in Baltimore City. They will coordinate and conduct school-based activities by ensuring effective communication via phone, mail, Zoom, and school site visits. The CHW will communicate regularly with the team to discuss the project and intervention delivery activities weekly.


The Community Health Worker will also be in close contact with the program co-directors and serve as a link between the schools, the hospital, and other referral destinations for children and adolescents with psychiatric emergencies. This position will be supervised by the co-directors of the hospital-school liaison program for suicide prevention.


This job requires strong outreach skills, knowledge about the target community, social networking abilities, and attention to detail, and would ideally require a 6-12-month commitment.


Specific Duties and Responsibilities

  • Coordinate services for students in schools who need outside support for psychiatric emergencies.
  • Co-lead educational sessions with families in schools.
  • Establish rapport with school staff and students.
  • Provide general information regarding the project to community and school members.
  • Respond to inquiries about the project, including face-to-face, over-the-phone/text, and web-based conversations.
  • Assist the team with data collection, make outreach and data collection schedule reminder calls and emails, and prepare outreach and follow-up data collection materials.
  • Monitor recruitment and retention of project participants.
  • Document outreach and follow-up activities and enter data as appropriate in a timely, accurate, and comprehensive manner per project protocol.
  • File, retrieve, and maintain participant records.
  • Perform all work activities per established protocols and procedures.
  • Attend weekly meetings and trainings.
  • Maintain confidentiality of all participants in accordance with employers' procedures.
  • With appropriate training and supervision as needed by the employer, deliver intervention programs to enrolled schools.
  • Any other duties at the discretion of the manager or PI of the project.

Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Fluent in English (additional knowledge of Spanish preferred).
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented with excellent time management skills.
  • Motivated and self-directed with the ability to work collaboratively with other study staff.
  • Must have reliable transportation to travel around the study areas and be comfortable working in the field, including interacting regularly with children and adolescents and their parents about mental health-related subject matters.
  • Experience working with and/or is from the target community.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to work independently and prioritize multiple tasks.
  • Must be willing to be trained as a community health worker.
  • Be responsive to phone calls, text messages and emails from team and school staff.


Technical Qualifications or Specialized Certifications

  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and Outlook.



Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or Graduation Equivalent Diploma.
  • 2 years related experience
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
