Chapman University invites applications for an Assistant Professor of Chemistry in the Schmid College of Science and Technology, with expertise in organic chemistry research , starting August 2025. This is a full-time, tenure track position that requires work to be performed in the State of California with specific in-person teaching responsibilities and required on-campus availability at Chapman’s Orange campus.

Schmid College of Science and Technology is one of 11 schools and colleges in the University. The undergraduate-only serving Chemistry and Biochemistry Program is home to a diverse group of faculty with specializations in a broad range of fields, including physical, organic, analytical, inorganic, and biochemistry. Responsibilities
The successful candidate will teach in the Organic Chemistry sequence (CHEM 230/331), teach upper-division elective courses that contribute to the major and minor, develop and maintain an active research program involving organic synthesis, and advise/mentor undergraduate research students. Significant scholarship, including publishing in peer-reviewed journal, presenting at relevant research conferences, and obtaining and managing extramural grants is an expectation of the position.
Required responsibilities include:
- Teach organic chemistry and potential upper-division chemistry courses. Current course descriptions are available at https://catalog.chapman.edu.
- Develop or continue an organic chemistry research program, including publishing papers and presenting work in this area at local and national conferences.
- Actively contribute as an integral member of Schmid College of Science and Technology in the ongoing development, implementation, and assessment of our academic and degree programs.
- Perform service to the unit, college, university, profession, and wider community as expected of a tenure track faculty member. Tenure-track faculty are expected to develop and maintain an active research agenda for future tenure consideration and are evaluated on their research/scholarly activity, teaching, and service.
Qualifications:
Required Qualifications
- An earned Ph.D. in Chemistry or related field by the start of employment from an accredited institution.
- A strong history of chemistry research, including demonstrated potential for building and leading an independent nationally recognized, externally funded chemistry research program.
- Demonstrated commitment to promoting diversity, inclusion, and multicultural competence in education and must be willing to contribute to the University Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion plan (https://www.chapman.edu/diversity).
Desirable Qualifications
- Evidence of effective teaching in higher education at the undergraduate level, particularly in organic chemistry or upper division coursework.
- Active involvement in professional organizations.
- Experience with development and implementation of innovative teaching practices.
- Ability to design and implement program and course assessment tools.
- Demonstrated commitment to collaborative research.
