Reporting to the Director of the Architecture Research Center (ARC), the Manager of Library Services oversees all aspects of patron services and access processing services to include day-to-day circulation of resources, course reserves, and stacks maintenance. The incumbent supervises, hires, orients, trains, evaluates and monitors the performance of student assistants, monitors workflows, coordinates student work schedules and assignments. The manager works closely with senior leadership to develop overall departmental goals and objectives.

This is a regular full-time position. The manager of library services works Monday through Friday from 9AM to 5PM, except for one evening shift from 1PM to 9PM (Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday).

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

In pursuit of the Libraries’ and University’s strategic objectives, models the University’s “DIRECCT” values (diversity, integrity, responsibility, excellence, compassion, creativity, and teamwork).

Responsible for general supervision of ARC staff and public services activities (60%)

  • Monitors public access areas of the ARC.
  • Hires, orients, trains, evaluates and supervises all non-exempt staff and student assistants.
  • Coordinates and prepares schedules for student assistants.
  • Approves student time sheets in workday.
  • Monitors workflows in Circulation, Course Reserves, and Interlibrary Loan (ILL) requests.
  • Provides basic reference assistance to library patrons and when appropriate refers researchers to the supervisor for in-depth reference services or to the Learning Commons in Richter Library for other academic services.
  • Maintains positive customer relations with library patrons while effectively carrying out library policies.
  • Develops and maintains useful documentation and procedures in print and in library websites (ARC) on a continual basis.
  • Authorized to reduce or waive library fines up to limits established by library and university policy.
  • Makes purchases and reconciles miscellaneous clerical and operational expenses as directed by the supervisor.
  • Prepares reports related to facilities complaints and liaises with facilities management.
  • Must be able to work with materials which may produce a moderate dust environment and be able to lift 30 pounds, push 50+ pounds, and reach while on a stool or ladder.

Communications, Relationships, and Service (15%)

  • Maintains professional, supportive customer service behavior with all library patrons.
  • Establishes effective and supportive interdepartmental relationships to increase unit effectiveness and disseminate information.
  • Communicates frequently and articulately with all university staff, faculty, and administrators in a timely manner regarding procedures, policies, and other administrative procedures.
  • Assists in gathering collection statistics.
  • Participates in Library Staff Committees

Coordinates operations of Circulation / Reserves / Reference desk (25%)

  • Maintains flow of Architecture Research Center Course Reserves, which includes preparing and processing items into system (Alma) modules.
  • Responsible for overseeing inventories and maintenance of the architecture stacks collections.
  • Supervises, delegates and coordinates student tasks for maintenance of general and distinctive architecture collections and projects in consultation with archivist and director.
  • Assists in database maintenance projects as needed.
  • Represents the Architecture Research Center on the Alma Fulfillment Functional Group.
  • Participates in library committees, task forces, and professional development training workshops.
  • Assists with special divisional and library-wide projects as assigned.

Percentages may vary dependent on service and operational needs of the ARC.

Minimum Qualifications (Education, Experience, Skills, Training, etc.)

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Three years of progressive work experience with at least one year of supervisory experience. Any relevant education, certifications and/or work experience may be considered.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • First-rate customer service and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to direct, manage, implement and evaluate department operations.
  • Ability to lead, motivate and train others.
