Under the general direction of the Director, Athletics and Dean of Instruction, Mathematics, Engineering & Computer Sciences, Science and Health Sciences Division and in conformance with all State, League and District policies and regulations, the Head Softball Coach/Physical Education, Kinesiology & Health Instructor at Reedley College will be responsible for:
Coaching:
- Provide direction for all facets of a successful college women’s softball program, including the selection and direct oversight of assistant coaches and the general supervision of other support staff (trainer, equipment manager, etc.);
- Lead and develop the student-athlete recruiting process for the softball program in compliance with CCCAA regulations to attract prospects, including recruiting assignments of all assistant coaches as appropriate
- Assist in building strong relations between the community and the athletic department, particularly with the high schools of the District;
- Ensure program compliance within the subject sports program with CCCAA regulations; establish and monitor effective procedures to ensure staff and student-athletes comply with such requirements; communicate the disciplinary or corrective consequences of violations as set forth in the provisions of enforcement procedures; report violations of regulations to the Athletic Director and/or appropriate administrator;
- Create a positive atmosphere for the student-athletes; support academic progress, retention, and matriculation of student-athletes through mentoring activities; refer student-athletes to support services, programs, resources, and other professionals as appropriate; maintain confidential student-athlete information;
- Provide instruction, mentoring, and coaching to student athletes in the skills, techniques, and competitive strategies necessary for individual and team achievement of athletic standards of performance;
- Evaluate individual and team performance and refine individual and team strategies throughout the season;
- Assist in planning and scheduling competitions, tournaments, and events in collaboration with coaches within and outside of the conference and in concert with academic schedules, District policy, and California Community College Commission on Athletics (CCCAA)/conference regulations;
- Provide referrals to prospective student-athletes to academic and student services as appropriate;
- Work with athletic counselors in assisting student athletes complete their academic requirements at the community college to transfer to four-year institutions or otherwise meet academic goals; and
- Develop and implement appropriate fundraising activities in accordance with College and District policies.
Teaching:
- Teach courses as assigned within the Kinesiology, Physical Education, Health and Recreation Programs, depending on qualifications and experience;
- Support, mentor and advise students including scheduling sufficient weekly office hours on campus;
- Contribute to curriculum and program development and/or revision, including program review and the development and assessment of student learning outcomes for courses and programs;
- Assist in the advancement of the institutional mission and goals;
- Serve on and attending department, college, and district committees as needed;
- Participate in program review, student learning outcome development and assessment to improve student learning;
- Teach assignments in a variety of instructional settings and times, including evening and/or weekends, on-line or off-campus and large group instruction classes as needed; and
- Otherwise fulfilling all of the duties and responsibilities of instructors as required by Administrative Regulation 7122.
All candidates must have evidence of responsiveness to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, as these factors relate to the need for equity-minded practice within the classroom; and
- Master’s in physical education, exercise science, kinesiology and two years of directly related experience; or
- Bachelor’s degree in any of the above and Master’s in any life science and two years of directly related experience; or
- A valid California Community College Credential; or
- The equivalent education and/or experience (requires an equivalency).

- Experience and skill incorporating elements of diversity, equity, and inclusion into all areas of responsibility;
- Recent experience working with African American, Asian/Pacific Islander, Latinx, Native American, and other racially minoritized students in the classroom and an understanding of how historical patterns of exclusion of these groups in higher education shape patterns of participation and outcomes;
- Experience working with students of various cultural, gender, age, socioeconomic, and ethnic backgrounds including students with disabilities;
- Willingness to examine and remediate one’s instructional, relational, and classroom practices to more effectively engage and support racially minoritized students;
- Related work and professional experience;
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with students and staff;
- Demonstrated ability to work with computers, and other technologies, which are utilized in providing high-quality instruction and support to students;
- Experience in athletic recruiting;
- Experience fundraising;
- Involvement in community organizations and activities;
- Previous successful Head Coaching Experience (High School and/or College);
- Experience teaching; and
- Knowledge of the community college and its mission and goals.
178 duty days per year.
Salary and Benefits:Starting annual salary is $71,054 – $106,970 based on education and experience. An annual doctoral stipend of $2,419 is available. Coaches are eligible to receive a stipend of 10% of annual salary for fulfilling coaching duties pursuant to the collective bargaining agreement. In addition, the District offers an attractive fringe benefit package including medical, dental, and vision coverage for the employee and dependents, and life insurance. Employees are also members of the California State Teacher’s Retirement System (CalSTRS).
Selection Procedure:Applications will be screened by Human Resources for completeness and to determine which applicants meet the minimum qualifications as stated in the job announcement.
From the applicants who meet the minimum qualifications and who have submitted all the required documents by the closing date and time listed on the job announcement, a selection advisory committee will review the candidates who are best qualified based on the minimum and desirable qualifications then determine who will be invited to interview.
The selection advisory committee will rate responses to the interview questions, teaching demonstration, and writing prompt (if applicable). Based on this rating, a small number of applicants will be selected as the “recommended candidates”. These candidates will be forwarded to the Vice President and College President for final interviews.
A hiring recommendation will be made by the College President and forwarded to the Board of Trustees of State Center Community College District for final approval.

State Center Community College District (SCCCD) was formed in 1964 when it assumed control of Fresno City College and Reedley College. SCCCD serves approximately one million people and 18 unified and high school districts in more than 5,500 square miles of urban and rural territory, including most of Fresno and Madera counties and portions of Kings and Tulare counties. SCCCD is governed by a seven-member board of trustees who represent seven trustee areas. Total district enrollment for the fall semester 2012 is over 34,000 students. SCCCD is a merit system district with over 2,300 faculty and classified staff represented by the California School Employees Association (CSEA) and the American Federation of Teachers (AFT). The total operating budget for SCCCD in 2012-13 is $168 million.
Fresno City College, established in 1910, enrolls in excess of 22,000 students and offers more than 100 associate of arts and science degree programs and 60 certificate of achievement programs in vocational/occupational areas. Reedley College, established in 1926, is located in Reedley (approximately 25 miles southeast of Fresno) and enrolls approximately 6,200 students in a variety of courses and degree programs in occupational education and the arts and sciences. SCCCD operates three educational centers with a combined enrollment of approximately 8,300 students. The Willow International, Madera and Oakhurst centers offer programs in general education for transfer and two-year degrees. In addition, the district offers occupational and technical training at its Career and Technology Center and the Training Institute.
