Applications are being accepted for the position of Assistant Professor, Geology/Oceanography, at San Diego Mesa College, beginning Spring 2025. Assignments may include some combination of day, evening, and/or online classes.

Major Responsibilities The position is a part of the Physical Sciences Department, which reports to the Dean of the School of Mathematics and Natural Sciences.

The department offers courses in the disciplines of Astronomy, Engineering, Geology, Oceanography, Physical Science, and Physics.

The primary teaching duties for this position will be geology courses for non-majors; secondary assignments may include oceanography courses. Additional responsibilities will include supervising and instructing students, maintaining office hours for student help, advisement and counseling, participating with other college faculty on academic committees, assisting in the development of
curriculum and a willingness to take on leadership responsibilities within the department. Qualifications Master's in geology, geophysics, earth sciences, meteorology, oceanography or paleontology OR Bachelor's in geology AND Master's in geography, physics, or geochemistry OR the equivalent. • Recent experience teaching college-level geology and/or oceanography lecture and laboratory courses in both in person and online modalities to non-majors, especially with students of great diversity in socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds.
• Current knowledge of instructional practices and culturally responsive pedagogical techniques for engaging students with different levels of academic preparation and varying physical and learning abilities in both in person and online settings.
• Experience in co-curricular and outreach activities designed to support students' academic and professional success, nurture students' passion for science and develop their STEM identity.
• Experience in and/or knowledge of developing effective laboratory curriculum and field experiences that provide students with practical hands-on learning that complement their theoretical learning.
• The ability to make effective classroom presentations, online content, and assessments by demonstrating a working knowledge of learning theory, techniques of teaching, and subject matter mastery.
• Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with students, faculty, administrators, instructional laboratory technicians and other colleagues.
• Participation in ongoing professional development activities.
