Job Description
Classification Title:
Assistant / Associate / Professor - Virology, RNA virus, emerging viruses
Job Description:
The Department of Molecular Genetics and Microbiology at the University of Florida (UF) College of Medicine invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant, Associate or Full Professor of Virology. The Department has begun a major expansion of the faculty as part of a 5-year strategic plan. We seek outstanding creative investigators in any area of virology, including but not limited to pathogenesis, virus-host interactions, viral immunology, neurovirology, polymicrobial infections, and arbovirology.
The Department is committed to pursuing world-class virology research that leverages the highly interactive and rapidly expanding virology community at UF. UF has more than 70 virology research laboratories situated across seven colleges/institutes. Research spans many virus families, with existing strengths in arboviruses, tumor viruses, and RNA viruses that infect mucosal surfaces. Our virology group is supported by the UF Emerging Pathogens Institute, UF Center for Inflammation & Mucosal Immunology, UF Health Cancer Center, Colleges of Veterinary Medicine and Dentistry, CDC Southeastern Center of Excellence in Vector Borne Diseases, and NIH Southeast Center for Integrated Metabolomics. UF is also developing a world-class artificial intelligence (AI) research infrastructure to support investigators. Our faculty include some of the brightest and most innovative scholars in the discipline. We invite you to learn more about the Department of Molecular Genetics and Microbiology at UF by visiting https://mgm.ufl.edu/.
A core philosophy of our Department and the UF College of Medicine is to create a welcoming and supportive environment for everyone. Women and members of underrepresented groups are strongly encouraged to apply. The successful candidate will be expected to promote and contribute to these core values, develop a vibrant, externally funded research program, participate in graduate-level teaching, and recruit and mentor outstanding trainees. Applicants should hold a PhD, MD or MD/PhD in the biomedical sciences or a related field of study. A highly competitive start-up package is available. Applications must be submitted at (https://jobs.ufl.edu/) no later than October 31, 2024.
Your assignment may be changed based on the needs of the department and/or college. Your annual faculty teaching, research and service assignments, and your annual evaluation will be prepared by the Chair of the Department of Molecular Genetics and Microbiology. As a member of the University of Florida College of Medicine faculty, your first year assignment will be:
1. TEACHING: It is anticipated that your teaching assignments will involve courses for graduate and professional students. Graduate student teaching will involve courses taught by the department for students enrolled in the Biomedical Sciences Graduate Program (BMS) in the College of Medicine. To facilitate setting up your research program at the University of Florida, you will not be assigned any major teaching or administrative responsibilities during the first year. We recommend, however, that you consider delivering a few lectures in your area of expertise to acquaint yourself with the graduate students whom you may want to recruit to your program. After the first year, it is expected that you participate in the teaching programs within the Department of Molecular Genetics and Microbiology, as well as the normal administrative tasks that accrue to faculty members within academic institutions. Your participation in these areas will be typical of other faculty members with similar research commitments within the department.
2. RESEARCH & SCHOLARSHIP: You will be expected to apply for extramural grant funding to support your research activities. In addition to national grant programs, you also may want to apply to local state agencies that have grant programs. Under current College of Medicine guidelines, you will be expected to secure salary support from extramural grants that is equivalent to the percentage of your total assigned effort for research. You will be expected to accomplish this by the end of your fifth year of employment with the University of Florida. At the end of the first year and each year thereafter, your department chair will decide the percentage of time you will be assigned to research, teaching and administrative duties. This is routinely done with all faculty members at the University of Florida and annual evaluations and promotion decisions will be based, in part, on these assignments. It is anticipated that your research assignment will stabilize at 70% or more with the remainder of your assignment 30% apportioned to teaching after your start-up period. The exact splits will depend on grant support for salary and on teaching and administrative needs of the department.
Expected Salary:
Annual salary range is $120,000 - $160,000 and is commensurate with qualifications and experience.
Minimum Requirements:
Ph.D. / MD
Preferred Qualifications:
Ph.D. and/or M.D. degree and 3+ years of postdoctoral experience; a demonstrated ability to conduct original, innovative virology research.
Special Instructions to Applicants:
In order to be considered, you must upload references, cover letter, and resume/CV.
If selected as one of the final candidate, three letters of recommendation must be provided.
Selected candidate will be required to provide an official transcript to the hiring department upon hire. A transcript will not be considered “official” if a designation of “Issued to Student” is visible. Degrees earned from an educational institution outside of the United States are required to be evaluated by a professional credentialing service provider approved by National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES) http://naces.org/.
