Job Description:
The Biology Department at Fairfield University invites applications for a full-time tenure-track Marine Biology faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning Fall 2025, pending final budget approval. Marine biologists with research in aquaculture, fisheries, conservation or marine seaweeds are of particular interest to the department as are individuals with an interest in collaborative work with local, state, or federal organizations. The ideal candidate would develop a research program that uses an experimental approach that takes advantage of our proximity to the Long Island Sound. We are particularly interested in candidates who develop projects that use local organisms and who include both field and lab components to engage undergraduate students in research. The position will support the concentration in Marine Biology within the Biology major and provide a foundation for growth of the marine science program at Fairfield. The teaching load is three undergraduate courses each semester (labs count as a full course), with research and university service also required for promotion and tenure. Biology faculty teach a diversity of courses; likely courses for this hire would include: marine science at the non-majors level, general biology for majors and an upper level marine biology course in their area of specialty.
Requirements:
Applicants are expected to have completed a Ph.D. in Biology with a marine focus, or closely allied field. Applicants must have a history of scholarship as indicated by peer-reviewed scholarly accomplishments, strong commitment to excellence in undergraduate teaching and the potential for developing an active research program in their area of specialization that involves undergraduates. Additionally, a commitment to pedagogical innovation and demonstrated excellence in using technology in the classroom is required. Previous teaching and postdoctoral experience are preferred. Candidates are encouraged to discuss how they will promote an equitable, diverse, and inclusive scientific community at Fairfield University in their application materials.
Additional Information:
The department consists of twenty-two full-time faculty representing a range of specialties and is housed in a spacious, well-equipped facility in the Bannow Science Center. The Biology department has a vibrant culture of undergraduate student-faculty collaboration in research, regular departmental extra-curricular events and guest lecturers, and a large student interest in the health sciences. Our location provides ready access to Long Island Sound. The local natural resources have historic, cultural, recreational and commercial importance and the ideal candidate would utilize these local resources in their research. The salary and benefits for the position are highly competitive.
Fairfield University is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action employer, committed to excellence through diversity, and, in this spirit, particularly welcomes applications from women, persons of color, veterans, Jesuits, and members of historically underrepresented groups. The University will provide reasonable accommodations to all qualified individuals with disabilities.
