Position Summary:Seeking an outstanding individual to join the vegetable entomology lab to work on diverse vegetable crops, pests, and pathogens for developing novel and sustainable IPM strategies to boost vegetable production in South Georgia. The position is held in the Department of Entomology at the University of Georgia-Tifton Campus in the Vegetable Entomology Lab led by Dr. Saumik Basu. The goals of our vegetable entomology lab are to seek and develop novel and sustainable integrated pest management strategies to improve major vegetables in South Georgia, a hub of vegetable production in the US. Our team will be working on multiple projects associated with major pest problems (whiteflies, diamondback moths, thrips, pepper weevils, etc.) and some of the vector-transmitted diseases, causing huge losses to key vegetables (e.g., cabbage, tomato, collards, onion, pepper, eggplant, etc.) produced in southern Georgia. Our research projects address issues associated with the vegetable industry and provide information and solutions applicable to the vegetable growers and county agents in Georgia.
The incumbent with strong research and communication skills will work both independently and as part of large and interdisciplinary groups associated with vegetable research here on the Tifton campus. The postdoctoral researcher will also collaborate with several professors from the Griffin and Athens campuses, field technicians, graduate students, and international student assistants. The incumbent will be involved in research, project execution and field work, data collection, management and analysis, article and report writing, and supporting extension activities (field days, extension publications, farm visits, etc.).
The position is initially a 1-year, full-time appointment, with the option and expectation of extension contingent on funding, available work, and successful performance.
Successful candidates will have a Ph.D. degree in Entomology, Agronomy, Plant Pathology, or related discipline. Candidates with experience in host resistance, IPM practices, plant and soil health, vector biology, plant-insect (and/or pathogen interactions) are encouraged to apply.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies :Strong molecular skills and profound knowledge of working in fields, greenhouses, and laboratory environments. Strong experience in setting up various insect and/or pathogen bioassays and insecticide trails in the field and greenhouse is required for this position. Strong molecular techniques like gel electrophoresis, PCR, and RT-qPCR, skills in DNA, RNA, and protein extractions both from insects and plants, various detection techniques, knowledge of using genomic, transcriptomic, and proteomic tools, NGS, and other large-scale data analysis are highly desirable. Proficiency in English, strong analytical, statistical, and scientific writing skills are mandatory for this position. The ability to work both independently and in a highly collaborative environment are crucial for this position.
