The UConn-URI Navy STEM Coalition within the National Institute for Undersea Vehicle Technology (NIUVT) at the University of Connecticut, College of Engineering seeks qualified applicants for a Financial Assistant 2 position. The UConn-URI Navy STEM Coalition seeks to establish a long-term STEM pipeline program for naval-related careers in Southeast New England. The program will engage STEM talent K-12 through graduate school in innovative naval-focused activities and hands-on projects through participation from the regional Navy community to provide early and frequent interaction and ultimately, retention of students from this community. Working under the direction of the NIUVT Co-Director, the Director of the UConn Navy STEM Education Program, and the NIUVT Fiscal Officer, the successful candidate will perform pre- and post-award duties related to the management of the newly funded Advancing Naval Careers Through Higher Education Outreach and Research. (ANCHOR). in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) awarded to the University of Connecticut.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES- Provides direction, training, and assistance to Principal Investigators and department staff in financial award management including remaining balances, anticipated payroll expenses, and incoming funding.
- Maintains detailed knowledge of each sponsored project and offers assistance for all matters of post-award management throughout each stage of the award lifecycle.
- Assists faculty with the preparation of grant applications for submission, including drafting proposal documents, informing faculty of the submission process, establishing a grant record, and drafting budgets and justifications.
- Reviews fiscal aspects of grant awards to ensure fiscal compliance with federal and state statutes, University policy, and sponsor agency guidelines and requirements as pertained to allowable costs.
- Supports monitoring, tracking, and interpreting fiscal records for a portfolio of accounts including payroll records, purchasing, travel, and other disbursements to maintain compliance with grant policies.
- Processes no-cost extensions, re-budgets, and cost transfers on grant and contract accounts.
- Reviews personnel commitments for both paid and unpaid effort, ensuring data is correctly certified within the University’s Effort Reporting System.
- Reviews and approves transactions related to grant and contract accounts such as invoices, travel, reimbursements, and requisitions.
- Maintains internal records of grant applications and information, including budget details, invoices, correspondences, submitted applications, and budget justifications, utilizing the various systems (InfoEd, Kuali Financial System, Huskybuy, etc.).
- Maintains internal grant management database with grant submissions and related account information.
- Performs related work as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field and two years of related experience. An equivalent combination of education and/or experience may be substituted for the degree and years requirement.
- Superior verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Self-starter with superior organizational skills, including the ability to prioritize, multi-task, and follow through.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite software.
- Willingness and ability to occasionally work outside of standard hours, in order to accommodate scheduling requirements and programmatic objectives.
- Experience working with companies in the defense industry.
- Transactional experience working in a budgeting oversight/fiscal capacity.
- Experience working in a research setting or within a university.
- Experience working within STEM disciplines.
This is a full-time, end-date position that may be annually renewed based on performance and available funding with an excellent benefits package. Other rights, terms, and conditions of employment are contained in the collective bargaining agreement between the University of Connecticut and the University of Connecticut Professional Employees Association (UCPEA).
