INTRODUCTION
This position is categorized as “Open to Agency Only”; this position is only open to current UConn NP-2 employees.
UConn’s Facilities Operations Department has a job opening for a 2nd Shift Maintenance Supervisor 1 – General. This is a permanent, full-time, 2nd shift position, with a work schedule of Monday through Friday, 3:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m., 37.5 hours per week with an unpaid half an hour for lunch. This position is eligible for shift differential. The hourly rate of pay will be determined based on the employee’s current Step of the TC Pay Plan.
This position is categorized as Emergency Support Services/Essential Staff. Must be willing to work during emergency closures/delayed openings due to inclement weather or for significant events that affect campus operations. Applicants must also be willing to respond to emergencies on overtime (nights, weekends holidays). Please note that Facilities Operations NP-2 employees may also be required to perform job duties as assigned at any of the Regional Campuses.

This position is categorized as “Open to Agency Only”. Current, qualified UConn NP-2 employees will be considered for this position. This position requires considerable knowledge of modern methods and equipment involved in a variety of trades.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
At UConn, the 2nd Shift Maintenance Supervisor 1 position for the Facilities Operations Department is responsible for supervising a crew of highly skilled trade workers. This position is responsible for coordinating the daily work assignments for EICS Technicians, Skilled Trades Apprentices and QCW level employees; scheduling and assigning work to 2nd shift employees through AiM, estimating labor and material for jobs including writing quotes; providing information to supervisors and managers on the progress of jobs in the shop; working with contractors and other trades employees; assisting employees with troubleshooting work and resolving issues; working with the manager to address disciplinary actions as required; monitoring the progress of job assignments through completion; overseeing the progress of renovations and upgrades; establishing good customer relations/communication; reviewing/approving timesheets in CORE-CT and completing overtime equalization rosters; completing administrative computer work and paperwork as required; working with the Facilities Operations Business Services Staff to coordinate Environmental Health & Safety and UConn training for the 2nd shift employees which includes: Asbestos Awareness, Confined Space, Lockout/Tag out, Mold Awareness, and Respiratory Protection & Fit Testing.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL, AND ABILITY
- Considerable knowledge of
- relevant state and national codes and regulations;
- modern methods and equipment involved in the trade indicated by the parenthetical title of the class;
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS – GENERAL EXPERIENCE
- Five (5) years of experience in the maintenance and repair of buildings.
NOTE: Experience performing technical duties within the maintenance trade area on a military base, aircraft carrier or large compound may be substituted for the General Experience on a year for year basis.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS – SPECIAL EXPERIENCE
- Three (3) years of the General Experience must have included performing skilled tasks in either the maintenance and repair of buildings or the military experience referenced above.
NOTE: For state employees this experience is interpreted at the level of a Skilled Maintainer.
MINMUM QUALIFICATIONS – SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED
- Graduation from vocational or technical school may be substituted for one (1) year of the General Experience.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Extensive experience in one or more of the following trade areas: Electrical, Plumbing and/or HVACR.
- Strong leadership skills are an important qualification for this position.
- Strong oral and written communication skills; strong interpersonal skills.
- Experience using computer software such as AiM, HuskyBuy, Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, and/or Kuali Financial System (KFS) is desired.
- Demonstrated experience in the use of computerized maintenance management software (CMMS).
- Extensive knowledge of the management and removal of regulated materials including asbestos, mold, lead and PCBs, as well as knowledge of applicable laws, regulations, nationally recognized standards and guidelines, as related to occupational safety and health is desired.
- Proficiency in the use of an I-Pad or similar technology.
- Knowledgeable of the NP-2 contract and University policies and procedures.
- Demonstrated experience in the supervision of employees in a variety of trades.
- Participation in job searches as a member of the hiring team.
- Experience working with university purchasing systems such as Fastenal and HuskyBuy.
- Experience working with the University payroll system CORE-CT.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.
- Incumbents in this class may be required by the appointing authority to possess and retain appropriate current licenses, permits and/or certifications.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility and visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties.
- A physical examination will be required.
- Incumbents in this class will be required to drive and operate motor vehicles, including, but not limited to vans, box trucks, and pick-up trucks ranging in size from compact, midsize, full-size, and heavy-duty, some of which are equipped with lift gates.
- Incumbents must have adequate physical strength and agility to walk up and down stairs frequently and climb ladders independently. Must be able lift, carry and push material weighing up to 75 lbs. Must have the ability to utilize ladders, scaffolding, high-lifts and enter confined spaces. Must be able to inspect, troubleshoot and repair equipment that is part of a wide range of electrical and mechanical systems. Incumbents must possess the ability to utilize tools, perform the required duties set forth above and will be required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) when necessary.
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Incumbents may be required to lift moderate to heavy weights; may be exposed to extreme weather conditions and to risk of injury from equipment.
- The appointing authority may require completion of an asbestos removal program consistent with EPA guidelines for operations and maintenance during employment in this class. Incumbents may be required to use protective equipment such as respirators and safety goggles.
