Description:
The Department of Mathematics at Washington and Lee University invites applications for a tenure-track position starting July 1, 2025. Washington and Lee University promotes a dynamic and inclusive environment that allows students and employees of multiple backgrounds, cultures, and perspectives to learn, work, and thrive together. Successful candidates will contribute to that environment and exhibit potential for excellence in teaching and for vigorous scholarship. In keeping with the University Strategic Plan, we welcome applications from candidates belonging to communities traditionally underrepresented in academia. W&L is a small, prestigious liberal arts institution, where mathematics is one of the largest departments. We are seeking an applicant who will help us expand our course offerings. We mentor a large, active, and growingly diverse group of talented students; the number of mathematics majors is five times the national average for a school our size. Almost all W&L students will take at least one mathematics course from us before they graduate, and we offer a variety of interesting and attractive courses at lower levels of mathematics that serve our student body at large. Our academic year is broken into two 12 weeks terms and a 4-week term. The teaching load is 5 courses per year with small class sizes of 15 – 25 students, and the university offers a generous sabbatical policy among many other generous benefits.
Qualifications:
Applicants should have a Ph.D. in mathematics with a successful record in research and in the classroom as well as a passion for excellence in teaching.
Application Instructions:
Your cover letter should clearly indicate how you would contribute to an energetic mathematics department in a liberal arts environment. To apply please submit the following application materials via Interfolio at http://apply.interfolio.com/151537: a cover letter, research statement, teaching philosophy, curriculum vitae, and at least three confidential letters of reference, one of which addresses teaching. Preference will be given to applications received by November 20, 2024.
Equal Employment Opportunity Statement:
Washington and Lee is an Equal Opportunity Employer. As such, we are interested in candidates who are committed to high standards of scholarship, performance and professionalism and to the development of a campus climate that supports equality and diversity in our faculty, staff and student body. Job description requirements are representative, but not all‐inclusive of the knowledge, skill, and abilities needed to successfully perform this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable qualified individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.
