Job Summary

This position is responsible for supervising and participating in the public safety operations of assigned shift(s) of Police Officers at Georgia Highlands College. The role requires working day, night, and swing shifts. This position is assigned collateral duties and responsibility as designated by Command Staff under the direction of the Chief of Police. This is a Position of Trust and will require handling confidential information and driving for the college.

Responsibilities
    Supervises assigned shifts of personnel; provides guidance for day-to-day activities, calls for service, emergency situations, and criminal investigationsPerforms patrol duties of campus/site property and surrounding area; performs security checks of all buildings and residence hallsResponds to calls for services; locks and unlocks doors; assists motorists
    Responds to medical calls and assists EMTs as neededInvestigates suspicious persons and situations, safety hazards, and unusual or illegal activityReviews and approves officers’ incident and accident reportsRuns criminal background checks; maintains the Georgia Crime Information Center TerminalIdentifies, pursues and arrests suspectsInterviews victims, witnesses and suspectsPrepares warrantsEnforces state traffic laws and parking regulationsProvides security for special eventsAttends court as requiredResponds to fire and burglar alarmsMaintains property and evidence recordsTrains, assigns, directs, supervises, evaluates and disciplines the work of assigned personnelPerforms related duties as assigned
Required Qualifications
    Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice or related field of study from an accredited institution
    Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the diverse objectives and functions of the sub-units in the division/department in order to direct and coordinate work within the division/departmentMust have eighteen (18) months experience in a sergeant capacity Must demonstrate a history of professionalism and ethicsMust be Georgia Peace Officer Certified through Georgia Peace Officers Standards and Tests (POST) Certification as a law enforcement officerMust be able to carry a firearm in the State of GeorgiaMust be able to work weekends, holidays, different shifts or swing shifts and at any of the Georgia Highlands College locations as needed upon requestPossession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license for the type of vehicle or equipment operatesMust be General Instructor Certified through Georgia Peace Officers Standards and Test (POST)
