Assistant/Associate Professor Position in Civil and Environmental Engineering

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEN) at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the assistant or associate professor level beginning in September 2025. The Department is particularly interested in candidates with a teaching and research focus in the broad area of geotechnical engineering. Specific areas of interest include but are not limited to: offshore/coastal geotechnics, geotechnical design for sustainability and extreme events, soil/structure interaction, biogeotechnics, environmental geotechnics, synergies of data science, AI and geotechnical engineering, and geosystem resilience. The Department has existing expertise in reliability, structural optimization, recycled materials, marine turbulence, renewable energy, environmental remediation, environmental justice and related areas, with strong programs in data science, robotics and environmental/marine sensing across the College of Engineering. The University supports strong interdisciplinary collaborations between researchers in the College of Engineering, the College of Arts and Sciences, the School for Marine Science and Technology, and the Center for Scientific Computing and Data Science Research (https://www.cscdr.umassd.edu/).

The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth is located in the beautiful ocean side community of Dartmouth, about an hour south of Boston, half-hour east of Providence, and half-hour west of Cape Cod. The College of Engineering is comprised of six departments: Bioengineering, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Computer and Information Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Physics. We offer 8 undergraduate degree programs, 8 concentrations, 11 graduate programs, and 8 accelerated BS-MS programs that serve more than 1,300 students. Our mission is to prepare graduates to meet 21st-century technological challenges and improve the well-being of society; create new knowledge in engineering, technology, and bioengineering; and engage and develop students to become leaders in their fields through service and scholarship.

Duties

The successful candidate is expected to develop a nationally recognized, externally funded research program; implement inclusive, evidence-based teaching and learning approaches to ensure the academic success of a diverse student population; advise undergraduate and graduate (MS & PhD) students; contribute to university and professional service; foster interdisciplinary collaborations; and actively engage in college and university diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives.

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must have earned bachelor’s and doctorate degrees in civil engineering or a closely related field at the time of appointment, be able to teach courses in geotechnical engineering, and demonstrate a strong commitment to teaching excellence and scholarly research as well as diversity, equity and inclusion.

Preferred Qualifications

Strong candidates will have research experience in geotechnical engineering or a related engineering field and teaching experience in higher education. Postdoctoral research in an interdisciplinary setting is highly desirable. Candidates with a professional engineering license will be preferred. We especially encourage applications from scholars historically underrepresented in science, mathematics, and engineering, including veterans and individuals with disabilities. We seek candidates who have demonstrated experience in efforts to increase the recruitment and retention of women and members of historically minoritized groups in engineering.

Salary: $101,000-$125,000.00
