Your opportunity:

The Financial Services Department (FSD) provides financial expertise to the University’s community. Comprised of a group of accounting professionals, the FSD office is focused on financial reporting and the University Guide to Financial Management policy compliance. The office provides support, guidance, and training to departments on financial matters.

As the Senior Financial Analyst, you will perform a broad range of duties including financial reporting, analysis and financial management, in support of the University community. You will liaise with multiple business units to resolve issues and provide guidance and advice.

You will foster strong working relationships with stakeholders and leverage your analytical skills to synthesize information, uncover trends, and deliver insights to optimize internal processes and improve decision-making.

You will administer University indirect overhead cost allocations to applicable units, short-term investment income or deficit financial charges distribution, and fixed asset amortization, to enable full accounting and reporting at each period-end and year-end.

Under the general direction of the Manager, Restricted Fund, and Ancillary Accounting, you will provide financial expertise to support the University’s fiscal year-end process, perform various year-end requirements, such as tracking the units’ progress of year-end tasks, producing financial statements, and coordinating audit requirements for external auditors, and producing various reports to meet ministry and other government agencies’ requirements. Your ability to work independently and as part of a highly cohesive team will allow you to take on new projects to ensure and promote the optimal function of our office, such as enhancing reporting processes by leveraging BI tools and databases effectively.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Overseeing the financial management of budgets, including strategic planning, forecasting and analysis.
  • Performing complex financial data modeling and analysis, and producing complex statistical reports.
  • Processing financial transactions according to the University Guide to Financial Management.
  • Monitoring, reconciling, and reporting on funding accounts.
  • Analyzing financial processes and procedures and recommending changes for improvement.
  • Analyzing and making recommendations for financial management and process.
  • Serving as an expert resource to senior leadership and across various teamswithin FSD.
  • Planning and managing institutional-level reporting and projects.

Essential Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree plus Post Graduate Certificate.
  • Minimum five years ’ related financial experience in accounting, modeling, analysis, and financial reporting, in a University or similar public sector environment.
  • Hands-on experience in preparing financial statements, including the Statement of Operations and Changes in Net Assets, and Balance Sheet.
  • Proficient in maintaining fixed asset schedules, asset capitalization & depreciation, budgets, monitoring accounts, financial reconciliations, forecasts, and analysis.
  • Skilled in maintaining complex financial models.
  • Experience with databases and business intelligence tools to analyze financial data and statistics.
  • Proven ability to conduct financial research and present findings effectively.
  • Demonstrated success in introducing innovative solutions and processes to improve efficiencies in financial management.
  • Successful track record of providing support and consultation to various stakeholders.
  • Advanced proficiency with MS Office Suite, including expert knowledge of MS Excel and Financial Information System (FIS).
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply knowledge of accounting principles.
  • Highly attentive to detail and accuracy.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize and execute complex projects and manage conflicting priorities within established timelines.
  • Ability to work independently as well as a collaborative team member in a multi-stakeholder environment.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment, respect matters of a sensitive nature, and maintain confidentiality.


Assets (Nonessential):

  • Completion of a recognized accounting program (CMA, CGA, CA).
  • Experience with accounting for ancillary business.
  • Experience with Business Intelligence reporting.
