- Train new users in safe and proper use of equipment and best practices for obtaining publishable data. Ensure the needs of all users are satisfied by either consulting directly with users and their faculty supervisors or by supervising the data collection and processing by other AMRIS Facility staff members.
- Recruit new users to the AMRIS Facility through various outreach avenues, both on campus and at national meetings.
- Train and support users in best practices of solution NMR spectroscopy for applications in natural products identification, metabolomics measurements, and biomolecular structure and dynamics characterization, including experimental design, instrument calibration, protocol validation, sample preparation, data analysis, and data deposition.
- Advise on AMRIS Facility guidelines for solution NMR data acquisition, processing, and archiving.
- Report instrument usage, unsatisfactory data collection, system errors and failures, and general policy conflict or abuse to the AMRIS Facility Director and Associate Director.
- Coordinate instrument scheduling for assigned high-field NMR instruments and provide summary reports on instrument usage.
- Advise on specifications for upgrading or purchasing new NMR instrumentation and support equipment to provide new specialized services. Assist with installation of new equipment and testing to determine if it meets specifications before dispersing final purchasing funds.
- Develop print- and web-based communications on solution NMR applications, capabilities, and best practices.
- Run service samples for users as requested.
- Ensure that all user needs for solution NMR experiments are satisfied.
Support 600 MHz NMR instrument in Medicinal Chemistry: Advise, assist and coordinate the creation, planning and execution of solution NMR experiments on the 600 MHz NMR instrument in the Department of Medicinal Chemistry in the College of Pharmacy. These tasks will be coordinated with faculty in that department.
Empower cutting edge research by developing and implementing new methodologies for internal and external users: Collaborate with and assist internal and external users of the AMRIS Facility with experimental protocols, data analysis, grant proposals, and manuscript preparation and review. Work with AMRIS Facility Director and Associate Director to develop new studies and advance technologies for AMRIS solution NMR applications. Also collaborate with AMRIS Facility staff to assist internal and external users of the other magnet resources in the AMRIS Facility with experimental protocols, data analysis, grant proposals, and manuscript preparation and review. These functions will be particularly important for developing new and emerging techniques for applications as opposed to using the instruments as a standard service tool as described above.
Quality control and performance measures for solution NMR experiments and assure Facility operations associated with assigned instruments comply with AMRIS safety regulations and expectations:
- Develop and perform quality control procedures for solution NMR experiments, including the design and regular implementation of QC protocols to test and calibrate RF probes and auxiliary equipment (including VT accessories, gradients and RF channels). Perform weekly standard procedures and tests to assure calibration and quality data is collected and problems are reported and addressed expeditiously. Also train and supervise relevant staff in conducting and maintaining these weekly standard procedures and tests, as necessary. Record all test results and prepare reports as requested.
- Schedule and perform, or supervise, all preventative maintenance, including servicing of magnets, consoles, gradients, probes, and VT systems for assigned NMR systems. Advise AMRIS Facility support staff on preventative maintenance schedules and procedures. Maintain records of all preventive maintenance and report results as requested.
- Report system status, potential problems, and failures to the AMRIS Facility Director and Associate Director. Ensure timely troubleshooting of equipment failures, including procuring repair parts, implementing repairs, supervising field service engineers and Facility staff, and testing equipment for proper function after repairs.
- Ensure maintenance of cryogens assigned NMR systems, including ordering of cryogens, liquid nitrogen and helium fills, and monitoring of helium recovery. Routine cryogen fills will be done with the assistance of AMRIS Facility support staff.
-
Assure Facility operations associated with assigned instruments and applications comply with AMRIS Facility safety regulations, University Environmental Health and Safety standards, and IUCAC procedures. Work with AMRIS Facility Director and Associate Director on implementing standard operating procedures (SOP) for solution NMR experiments. Communicate with AMRIS Facility, IACUC and AAALAC personnel as needed to maintain exemplary adherence to institutional and federal guidelines. Serve as contact for routine Environmental Health & Safety inspections on assigned instruments and supporting laboratory space.
