The Department of Near and Middle Eastern Civilizations in the Faculty of Arts & Science at the University of Toronto invites applications for a three-year full-time contractually limited term appointment (CLTA) in Assyriology. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2025.

Candidates must have earned a PhD degree in Assyriology by the time of the appointment. We are seeking a candidate who specializes in the Akkadian language and written culture, with a focus on the later periods of Mesopotamian civilization (late second and first millennium BCE). We seek candidates whose research and teaching interests complement and advance our existing departmental strengths. The successful candidate will be expected to pursue innovative and independent research, and to establish an outstanding, competitive, and externally funded research program.

The candidate must have a record of excellence in research, including engagement with published and unpublished primary sources. Evidence of excellence in research will be demonstrated by a record of publications in top-ranked and field-relevant monograph series and journals and/or forthcoming publications meeting high international standards, the submitted research statement, presentations at significant conferences, awards, and strong endorsements from referees of high standing.

Evidence of excellence in teaching will be provided through teaching accomplishments, the teaching dossier (with required materials outlined below) submitted as part of the application, as well as strong letters of reference. The candidate must also have a record of teaching the Akkadian language.

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The Department of Near & Middle Eastern Civilizations is concerned with the interdisciplinary study of the civilizations and cultures of the Near and Middle East from Neolithic times until the present, including their archaeology, history, mythology, religion and thought, art and architecture, and language and literature (Akkadian, Ancient Egyptian, Arabic, Aramaic, Coptic, Ge’ez, Hebrew, Persian, Sumerian, Syriac, and Turkish). The Department’s programs provide students with a unique opportunity to study non-Western complex societies and civilizations. The appointment will be held at the University of Toronto campus in downtown Toronto (St. George campus).
