The Department of Ecology & Evolutionary Biology at the University of Toronto invites applications for a Research Associate (Limited Term) for a two-year appointment. The anticipated start date is September 1, 2024.

The project is a collaboration between the University of Toronto and the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources & Forestry (OMNRF). The OMNRF has sampled and assembled a data set of fish, environmental conditions, and lower trophic levels from a large number of sites in Lake Erie over the last two decades. The project is to capitalize on this rich dataset to determine and test factors that may be contributing to the fish species composition and its changes in Lake Erie. In particular, Walleye and Yellow Perch are priority species given their importance to fisheries in Lake Erie. The Research Associate will work closely with Professor Don Jackson (EEB, U of T) and Dr. Yingming Zhao (OMNRF), and other collaborators on this project.

The core responsibilities include:

Develop hypotheses based on relevant literature and professional judgment to test with extensive spatial/temporal datasets from Lake Erie.Work with large datasets to analyze spatial patterns and associations of fish, environmental conditions, and lower food-web data (e.g. zooplankton)Collaborate with government scientists and biologistsPotentially organize a small workshop (select government and academic participants) related to the researchPresent research to collaborating organizations (e.g. Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources & Forestry) and scientific meetingsPrepare draft manuscripts for publication in scientific journalsSome travel within southern Ontario may be required to meet with collaborators, or additional travel within Canada/USA to present research findings at scientific conferences

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education – PhD in aquatic ecology, fisheries, ecological statistics or a related relevant area.

Experience – At least three (3) to five (5) years of demonstrated practice and research-based experience using statistical analyses on large datasets. A demonstrable track record of publishing in the scientific literature and presenting work at conferences.

Skills –

Have knowledge of advanced statistical analyses (e.g. spatial statistics, multivariate analysis, time series analysis)Have familiarity with aquatic ecosystemsKnowledge of fisheries and/or Great Lakes ecosystems is advantageous, but not essentialHigh level of knowledge in working with R and its packages, and ArcGIS. Working knowledge of MATLAB will be an asset.Detail-oriented and accurate.Self-motivated with an ability to multi-task. Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.Willingness and ability to learn new techniques and keep up to date in the field. Ability to lead a project and co-ordinate research teams.Strong verbal and written communication skills.
