Coordinate, equip, and facilitate the College’s science laboratory activities following established procedures and guidelines.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities (include, but not limited to)

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Prepare and assist science labs, experiments, and activities, and maintain orderliness of lab including safeguarding materials and equipment, and maintaining sterility of supplies and purity of cultures.
2. Train instructors and students in the safe/proper use of lab equipment and media.
3. Research, recommend, purchase, and maintain all laboratory equipment, technology, and supplies.
4. Establish and maintain vendor relationships. Establish and maintain contracts for laboratory equipment certifications and laboratory equipment repair. Establish End User Licensing Agreements.
5. Coordinate and provide support and assistance to instructors. Provide science software training and multimedia assistance to instructors and serve as the first contact person for multimedia related technical problems.
6. Coordinate safety and environmental compliance efforts in the lab and act as the College’s Chemical Hygiene Officer (CHO) developing standard operating procedures for all laboratory functions requiring the use of hazardous chemicals in the laboratories, and ensuring the safety of individuals working in laboratories.
7. Maintain current professional and technical knowledge in the field through professional education and activities.
8. Participate in and contribute to assignments and special projects of a similar nature and level.

Minimum Qualifications

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Thorough knowledge of chemistry (inorganic and organic), biochemistry, microbiology, biology, and anatomy and physiology.
  • Thorough knowledge of basic math including algebra, formulas, metric measures and conversions.
  • Thorough knowledge of and ability to follow safety and environmental regulations for handling and disposing of chemicals and biohazardous materials.
  • Effective interpersonal communication skills - oral, written and listening.
  • Ability to work effectively with students, instructors and all levels of staff providing direction on the use of different lab equipment and media.
  • Ability to multi-task, work on and coordinate several activities/projects simultaneously, and an aptitude to work under pressure.
  • Ability to manage time, organize and prioritize work and maintain lab systems; ability to operate and perform routine maintenance on a variety of instructional lab equipment.
  • Ability to apply critical thinking and problem-solving skills to work processes.
  • Orientation to detail, completing and maintaining a high level of accuracy.
  • Intermediate level computer software application skills in word processing and spreadsheets.

  • EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Life Science or related field with additional coursework in microbiology, chemistry and biochemistry.
  • Five years of work experience in a laboratory environment or related setting involving microbiology, chemistry and biochemistry. Experience in an educational environment managing scientific materials is preferred. Experience in environmental health and safety is a plus.

    The Science Lab Specialist supports the Math & Sciences department and is available to start on October 1, 2024.

    This is a full-time 40 hours per/week position

    Salary
    Salary is commensurate based on experience and is listed at the hiring range of the current salary table.
