Emerson College
Vice President for Student Affairs
Boston, Massachusetts
Emerson College, a premier global arts and communication institution with a foundation in the liberal arts, invites inquiries, nominations, and applications for its next Vice President for Student Affairs (VPSA).
Founded in 1880 and spanning three distinct campuses, it serves over 4,000 undergraduate and 1,500 graduate students. Its main campus is located downtown in the heart of Boston's Theatre District and offers the entire Emerson community experiences that are sewn into the very fabric of Boston. Emerson's Los Angeles campus provides a West Coast experience for up to 215 students pursuing semester-long internships and classes related to their field of study in iconic Hollywood. The Kasteel Well (Netherlands) campus has been a hub for international scholarship and research for more than 35 years. Emerson enjoys deep partnerships with institutions across the world, including the Paris College of Art, which adds to the richness of the Emerson experience. Emerson also runs the Emerson Prison Initiative (EPI), which works to democratize access to college education.
Emerson College is steeped in the values of equity, access, and social justice. The College educates future leaders in the arts and communication; inspires generations of students to think boldly and creatively; and ensures that all students, faculty, staff, and alumni contribute positively to the cultural, social, political, and civic landscape. With a grounding in the liberal arts and interdisciplinarity, students pursue academic majors and programs, such as Visual and Media Arts, Journalism, Literature, Marketing, Publishing, Theater, Communication Studies, Communication Science and Disorders, Writing, Comedic Arts, Interdisciplinary Studies, and many more.
Emerson's community is passionate and creative. The students are critical storytellers at a critical time. The next VPSA has the extraordinary opportunity to leverage the College's distinctive identity and skillset to provide leadership that, in partnership with new president Jay M. Bernhardt and the College community, will continue to propel Emerson forward. Reporting directly to the president and serving as a member of the President's Council, the Vice President for Student Affairs will be an experienced, dynamic, collaborative, and nimble leader who builds trust and forms strong partnerships to advance student-centered initiatives that enhance the student experience and support student learning and development. The VPSA will cultivate a culture of plurality, mutual respect, and civility supported by expectations of responsibility and accountability. The VPSA will excel at bridge building across the institution and into the Boston community, demonstrating deep understanding of the complexities and challenges in the daily lives of all students. The VPSA will model leadership and bring experience in shaping a vibrant and inclusive student experience that enriches all students' time at Emerson; engage and inspire stakeholders across the division and campuses to organize policies and services that amplify and maximize the conditions for student engagement and success; demonstrate an ability to advance equity, access, and social justice; make data-informed decisions; and support the continual growth and development of a dedicated team. The successful candidate will have a Master's degree, with an earned doctorate or terminal graduate degree being preferred.
Applications should include, as separate documents, a CV or resume and a letter of interest addressing the themes in the leadership profile. WittKieffer is assisting Emerson College in this search. For fullest consideration, candidate materials should be received by Monday, September 30, 2024.
Nominations, inquiries, and application materials can be directed to: Jen Meyers Pickard, Ph.D., Robin Mamlet, and Corin Edwards at EmersonVPSA@wittkieffer.com.
