The social media specialist will support the creation and implementation of a division-wide social media strategy; manage the day-to-day operation of the division's social media channels, including planning and producing campaigns and content; collaborate with other university and student organization accounts; co-manage a student content team; and regularly produce reporting to measure the impact of social efforts. This role will also serve as a resource for Student Affairs colleagues, advising on best practices for social media and ensuring compliance with university policies and guidelines.
This a new position within the Communications team and offers an exciting opportunity to help students make the most of their experience at Johns Hopkins, contribute to a sense of community across the university, and to do so in a way that's engaging and creative. The ideal candidate will be highly creative and collaborative, extremely well-versed in social media platforms and emerging trends, with considerable skills in message and content development, a solid sense for design, and demonstrated experience producing high-quality, engaging, and effective social media campaigns and content.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
- Support the development and implementation of a Student Affairs social media strategy aligned with the division's strategic goals and initiatives.
- Create engaging and informative campaigns, posts, graphics, videos, and other content for social media platforms that help drive student engagement and highlight resources and programming to support student belonging, development, and success.
- Plan and manage a content calendar that maps to the academic year and key dates, milestones, and traditions.
- Jointly manage a student content team, comprised of undergraduate and graduate students, who assist in sourcing and creating content that is relevant and authentic to the student experience.
- Collaborate with other Student Affairs departments and campus partners to amplify resources, programming, student stories, and campus life and traditions.
- Monitor divisional social media channels, respond to inquiries, and manage online conversations to maintain a positive, supportive, and engaged online community.
- Utilize analytics tools to measure the success of campaigns and adjust strategies as needed. Provide regular reports and analysis to inform decision-making.
- Ensure consistent branding and messaging across all social media channels.
- Work closely with colleagues, other divisional departments and programs, and campus partners to align social media efforts with divisional and broader university initiatives.
- Serve as a resource for Student Affairs colleagues, advising on best practices for social media use and ensuring compliance with university policies and guidelines.
- Identify and leverage trends, emerging platforms, and best practices to optimize the division's collective social media presence.
- Provide support to all efforts of the Communications team and other duties as assigned.
Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Proven experience in social media management and content creation.
- Strong understanding of social media platforms, trends, and analytics.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Solid understanding of principles of design, layout, and brand identity; demonstrated experience working within established brand standards.
- Proficient in graphic design tools and multimedia content creation.
- Superior attention to detail.
- Ability to think creatively, strategically, and analytically.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, cultural responsiveness, and the ability to work collaboratively with multiple groups, including students, staff, and administrators.
- Self-motivated with excellent problem-solving and time management skills.
- Ability to work effectively under deadlines and simultaneously juggle several assignments.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Communications, Marketing, or a related field.
- Two years related experience.
- Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
Preferred Qualifications
- Skilled in graphic design, photography, and videography; demonstrated understanding of how content is best leveraged across digital channels.
- Proficient with Canva, Adobe Creative Cloud (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, etc.), and related tools.
- Familiar with best practices for accessibility compliance, particularly across social media platforms.
- Experience in a higher education setting preferred.
