Job Summary/Description:

Assist the Director of Sports Medicine/Head Athletic Trainer in developing and implementing the sports medicine program for intercollegiate athletics. Including assisting with injury prevention programs, injury evaluations, injury management, injury treatment and rehabilitation, educational programs and counseling for student-athletes, as well as directing graduate assistants and student employees to perform predefined tasks.

Typical Duties/Job Duties:

  1. Assist the Director of Sports Medicine/Head Athletic Trainer with athletic training services (preventative, diagnostic, and rehabilitative) for the athletic department, including attendance at scheduled team and individual practices and home and away competitions as necessary.
  2. Assist with coordinating and conducting all student athlete welfare initiatives, i.e. sickle cell testing, concussion management screening and testing, and athletic nutritional programs, personal health and safety awareness programs, etc. Including assisting with coordination and scheduling of physical examinations and medical referrals for student-athletes related to practice and/or competition.
  3. Work with the strength and conditioning staff to ensure safety in the design and implementation of fitness, nutrition, and conditioning programs customized to meet individual student-athlete’s needs. Communicate effectively with student-athletes, coaches, and parents of student-athletes, regarding all of the following: injuries, availability for practice and / or competition, surgery and/or options, payment, services provided, and coordination of insurance payments when necessary.
  4. Assist the Director of Sports Medicine/Head Athletic Trainer with drug testing program, including: coordination of local testing, coordinating procedures for “positives,” and communicating results to coaches, student-athletes, and the director of athletics.
  5. Responsible for complying with all NCAA, LSC, Angelo State University, and Texas Tech System policies, rules, and regulations. Keep accurate records and documentation regarding all injury assessments, evaluations (pre and post season), medical referrals, insurance information, rehabilitation, and treatment. Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of intercollegiate sports programs.
  • Knowledge of human anatomy and physiology.
  • Knowledge of medical care, prevention, and treatment of athletic injuries.
  • Ability to work harmoniously and effectively with others.
  • Ability to perform the duties of a licensed / certified athletic trainer.
  • Skilled in both oral and written communication.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree in Athletic Training, Kinesiology, or a directly related field from an accredited regional university or college is required. A minimum of four (4) years athletic training experience required. A Master’s degree in Athletic Training, Kinesiology, or directly related field is preferred. A license from the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation is required, with certification by the NATA Board of Certification is preferred. Three (3) plus years of athletic training at the university level preferred. Athletic training experience in the sport of football preferred.

Location

History

The institution was founded in 1928 as a community college. By an act of the 58th Session of the Texas Legislature, the institution was designated as Angelo State College in 1965, the year it became a four-year, state-supported institution. The name was changed to Angelo State University in 1969. On Sept. 1, 2007, Angelo State University became a member of the Texas Tech University System.

ASU has a proud history of diversity, accepting Hispanics, who today make up more than 25 percent of the student population, from the very beginning. The institution enrolled African-Americans prior to Brown vs. Board of Education and one student broke the color barrier in Texas Intercollegiate football in 1953.

Academics

Angelo State offers courses through six colleges: Arts and Humanities; Business; Education; Health and Human Services; Science & Engineering; and Graduate Studies. The university is recognized for its strong undergraduate programs overall. For example, ASU's Physics Department has been recognized as one of the top undergraduate programs in the country. The university supports a young and vibrant Honors Program and continues a long tradition, begun in 1948, of encouraging international studies.

The university is also known for incorporating research into many undergraduate offerings. One recent bachelor's degree recipient, for instance, received the McClung Award for the Best Paper published in the BIOS, the official publication of Beta Beta Beta Biology Honor Society. Another was one of eight graduate students nationally to earn a U.S. Department of Energy Advanced Fuel Cycle Initiative Fellowship to support his graduate research.

Campus

Angelo State University's campus is situated on 268 acres in the center of San Angelo. The campus is lined with native live oak and pecan trees as well as imported palm trees. In addition to being one of the prettiest campuses in the region, it is one of the safest in Texas. The campus has ultramodern facilities with state-of-the-art technology support. ASU is home to the State of Texas Data Center, one of the state's two such facilities, which provide sophisticated computer processing and disaster recovery services for agencies and universities. Additionally, the university operates a 6,000-acre farm with a Management, Instruction and Research Center that includes a state-of-the-art meat laboratory.
