This is an academic year, 10-month appointment, with an anticipated start date of September 1, 2025.
Who We Are
Stony Brook University (SBU) is a State University of New York (SUNY) flagship, an internationally renowned public research institution (R1), and a member of the Association of American Universities. The School of Social Welfare (SSW) is one of five Health Sciences Schools, located within a rich interdisciplinary environment. Numerous opportunities exist for collaborative research and interprofessional training across disciplines on campus and beyond. The Health Sciences Center is located on the Stony Brook Campus alongside Stony Brook University Hospital, the Cancer Center, Stony Brook Children's Hospital, and the Long Island State Veterans Home. In New York City, SBU is the anchor institution for the development of a world-leading climate solutions center on Governor's Island, the New York Climate Exchange. The SSW has an extension education center in Manhattan, through which students can pursue master's degrees in social work. The SSW is home to a collegial academic community committed to building a more equitable society based on the values of human dignity, inclusiveness, diversity, equality, and on economic, environmental, racial, and social justice. The school's interdisciplinary research involves organizational partnerships from a wide variety of sectors (from community-based organizations to departments of health and social services) and academic disciplines (ranging from medicine and engineering to humanities).
The SSW's distinguished faculty engage in practice-oriented and policy-relevant research in several areas including disability justice; gender equality; intervention research; aging; intimate partner violence; the social determinants of health and mental health; structural racism; environmental justice; and immigration, among other areas. The SSW has an enrollment of approximately 700 students in its BSW and MSW programs with curricula grounded in a student-centered and evidence-informed pedagogy.
In the Fall of 2024, a cohort of doctoral students will begin in the newly re-configured PhD program at the SSW. Following a comprehensive evaluation process which informed a redesign, the SSW's research PhD Program provides students with a rich opportunity to ground their learning in an interprofessional context, with a specific focus on understanding and addressing the social determinants of health, anchored to a deep commitment to human rights, and social, economic, and environmental justice.
We are seeking a new faculty member who will serve in a key administrative role as Director of the SSW's PhD Program, who will join our vibrant and engaged community, and who will expand the research methodological strengths, areas of research, and instructional profile of the SSW. This is an exceptional time for an energized and visionary educator and leader, committed to shaping responsive, contemporary doctoral education in social work, to serve as the SSW's PhD Program Director. The PhD Program Director oversees all elements of the academic program, serving as Chair of the SSW's Doctoral Program Committee and engaging with the SBU Graduate School. The PhD Program Director participates as a member of a collaborative generative SSW academic administrative team, contributing in pivotal ways to the overall academic vision for the SSW. The PhD Program Director will be poised to actively pursue their own research as a member of the faculty, to collaborate with world-class colleagues, and to work closely with the Dean to advance the PhD program through fundraising and development efforts and to provide exceptional opportunities for students to advance their research skills.
