Engineering and Science Education, Department Chair Clemson University invites applications for the position of Department Chair in the Department of Engineering and Science Education (ESED). Candidates are expected to merit appointment at the rank of full professor with tenure. July 1st, 2024 is our anticipated start date for this role.

About Engineering and Science Education at Clemson University:

The ESED department conducts and advances research in all science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) disciplines, translates research to evidence-based practice, and prepares leaders who will act as catalysts for change. We are committed to fostering a diverse, equitable, and inclusive environment where collaboration and creativity thrive. ESED faculty have established strong research programs via external funding (including multiple NSF CAREER awards), peer-reviewed scholarly work, national and international collaborations, and mentoring undergraduate and graduate researchers. The ESED department is focused on graduate student education through a student-centered approach to courses and professional development activities, offering a Ph.D. in Engineering and Science Education and a certificate for Ph.D. students in STEM majors across colleges.

Since the program was established in 2006, graduates from the Ph.D. and certificate programs have taken positions at research-intensive and teaching-focused academic institutions as well as positions in industry and non-profit organizations. There are nine research-active faculty members, two faculty with administrative appointments, one postdoctoral research fellow, two staff members, and 24 graduate students in the ESED department, which is poised to grow through joint appointment hires with other STEM departments and a new cohort of postdoctoral researchers.

Responsibilities:

The successful department chair will be expected to provide strategic leadership to strengthen the existing reputation of the ESED department within the local and national arenas. They will build on the culture of inclusion, belonging, and respect for all members of the ESED department, and advocate for resources and support for its growth. They will also teach at the undergraduate and graduate level and conduct research at a level commensurate with the expected administrative duties.

  • An earned doctorate degree in an area aligned with the expertise of the faculty in the ESED department (e.g., science education, engineering education, mathematics education, STEM fields)

  • A distinguished record of achievement in STEM education research through funded projects and scholarly publications sufficient for appointment as a full professor with tenure at Clemson University

  • Demonstrated leadership ability, including managing budgets and aligning activities with strategic priorities

    Working at Clemson University

Clemson is a dynamic research university located in Upstate South Carolina at the center of the booming I-85 corridor between Charlotte, N.C., and Atlanta, Ga. One of the nation’s most selective public research universities according to U.S. News & World Report and The Princeton Review, Clemson University is the school of choice among top students in South Carolina and is increasingly competitive for the best students in the region and the nation. More than 17,100 students select from 70 undergraduate and 100 graduate degree programs through five academic colleges: Agriculture, Forestry and Life SciencesArchitecture, Arts and HumanitiesBusiness and Behavioral ScienceEngineering and Science; and Health, Education and Human Development.

Clemson’s transformation into a leading research institution — currently attracting in excess of $140 million in externally funded research and sponsored program awards per year — is based upon an academic plan that identifies eight emphasis areas in which the University has opportunities to increase education and research, to align with South Carolina’s economic development needs and to draw upon faculty strengths. Emphasis areas include automotive and transportation technology, advanced materials, biotechnology and biomedical sciences, leadership and entrepreneurship, sustainable environment, information and communication technology, family and community living, and general education.

Major economic development initiatives that have emerged from the academic plan include the Clemson International Center for Automotive Research — a 250-acre campus in Greenville, which has generated more than $225 million in public and private commitments in just four years; an advanced materials initiative at the Clemson Research Park, which includes a new LEED Silver-certified facility; and the South Carolina Health Sciences Collaborative — an initiative of the state’s three research universities and major health-care systems.

As the state’s land-grant university, Clemson reaches out to citizens, communities and businesses all over South Carolina. The Public Service Activities division includes the county-based Cooperative Extension Service, five off-campus research and education centers through the Clemson University Experiment Station and critical regulatory responsibilities for plant and animal health.

The University boasts a 1,400-acre campus on the shores of Lake Hartwell within view of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Surrounding the campus are 18,000 acres of University farms and woodlands devoted to research. A warm campus environment, great weather and recreational activities offered by proximity to both the natural surroundings and large cities are part of the Clemson Experience.
