Job Description:

Amherst College invites applications for the Reporting and Applications Developer position. The Reporting and Applications Developer is a full-time, year-round position, and starting salary is commensurate with experience. Given Amherst's distinction as one of the most diverse liberal arts colleges in the country, the successful candidate will demonstrate the ways in which they bring value to and will work towards supporting a broadly diverse community.

Under the supervision of the Director of Advancement Reporting and Systems, works with other Advancement Reporting and Systems developers to design, develop, and implement various internal and external reports and web applications. Provide solutions that deliver measurable business value and process improvement in support of the Advancement's mission. Help to maintain and expand the department's existing business intelligence suite.

The person in this role is expected to work as part of a collaborative and inclusive team including taking appropriate actions to support a diverse workforce and participating in the College's efforts to create a respectful, inclusive, and welcoming work environment. In addition, all advancement staff members are required to support and staff key events such as Reunion, Homecoming, and Family Weekend. These events may require occasional evening and weekend hours.

This position is eligible to participate in the College's hybrid or remote work program. All remote work must be performed within one of the Amherst registered payroll states, which currently includes Massachusetts and Connecticut. Additional details will be discussed during the interview process.

Summary of Responsibilities:

Reporting Support and Development
  • Create and modify tables, views, functions, and stored procedures in SQL Server
  • Design, develop, test, and maintain reports delivered through Tableau, Excel, email, and web applications and used by Advancement and campus partners
  • Work with end users to gather and refine requirements and coordinate testing


Applications Support and Development
  • Work in the Laravel, SQL Server, Vue.js technology stack to build and maintain internal and external browser-based applications used by a diverse set of Advancement colleagues to support critical business processes
  • Utilize Test Driven Development and Automated Testing to ensure code quality
  • Practice Continuous Learning and Development to stay up to date with the latest coding improvements and deliver state-of-the-art solutions to business needs
  • Provide client support, including off-hours / on-call support for a wide range of applications


​Qualifications:

Required
  • Bachelor's Degree
  • 3 to 5 years of related experience
  • Equivalent work experience in lieu of minimum education and related experience
  • 3+ years of experience building queries, procedures and reports in SQL Server, MySQL or Oracle
  • 3+ years of experience building PHP applications
  • Working knowledge of Tableau reporting
  • Strong organizational, time management, and written and verbal communication skills
  • High level of attention to detail, accuracy, and thoroughness
  • Strong interpersonal skills - ability to collaborate and work effectively with all levels of the college community
  • Ability to work independently and/or work well with a team depending on the situation
  • Comfortable learning and incorporating new technologies
  • Ability to synthesize information and set/suggest policy
  • Commitment to excellence and quality, appreciation of customer service
  • Focus on continuous improvement
  • Commitment to or experience working with a diverse community


Preferred
  • 5+ years of experience with SQL Server, building complex queries, procedures, and reports
  • 3+ years of experience building Laravel applications
  • 2+ years of experience with Vue.js or similar JavaScript framework
  • 2+ years of experience Tableau reporting
  • Working knowledge of MS Access
  • Experience with GitLab or GitHub for version control
