Laboratory Animal Technicians (LAT) at the University of Oklahoma-Norman Campus provide basic husbandry and health surveillance to research animals. LAT’s work in a team environment and participate in group projects focused on improving team efficiency and individual growth.
Essential Duties:
- Observes animals for obvious abnormalities and reports to designated personnel.
- Transfers animals from soiled to clean enclosures, protecting the individual identity of animals.
- Provides sanitation of equipment and animal cages to ensure cleanliness.
- Operates industrial cage washing machines.
- Prepares machines for startup and shut down.
- Ensures all equipment, bedding, and cages are clean and in working condition.
- Reports any problems to designated personnel.
- Provides food and water to laboratory animals.
- Follows safety procedures and requests assistance if work deviates from routine to ensure standard policies and practices are followed.
- Maintains assigned work areas in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations, and established standard operating procedures to ensure the efficiency, effectiveness, and quality control of the laboratory and compliance with federal, state, and university regulations and standards.
- Attends, as required, OU HSC and Comparative Medicine training sessions, including radiation safety, laboratory safety, blood-borne pathogens, and OSHA.
- May assume additional responsibilities based on individual experience, training, and interest.
- Performs various duties as needed to successfully fulfill the function of the position.

- Knowledge of all applicable requirements, regulations, and laws.
- Ability to communicate verbally and in writing.
- Ability to work independently and with a team.
- Ability to identify, address issues and deficiencies, and implement effective solutions.
- Ability to handle all types of animals.
- Ability to work flexible hours including weekends and holidays.
- Stoop, bend, reach, touch, and smell.
Certifications:
- Valid Oklahoma Driver’s License or the ability to obtain within 30 days of hire.
Physical Requirements:
- Due to the physical requirements of this position, the candidate must be able to lift 30 pounds.
- Must be able to pull, push, lift, engage in repetitive motions, communicate, including expressing oneself or exchanging information with others.
- Stand for prolonged periods.
- Works in an animal facility. Handling all types of animals that bite and scratch. Exposure to odors, animal dander, and a dirty environment.
Department Preference:
- Experience working with animals (laboratory, farm or clinical).
- AALAS certifications including ALAT, LAR and/or LATG.
- Registered Veterinary Technician or similar training and education.
- CMAR management certification or other management experience.
