House Manager/Assistant Box Office Manager – Clarence Brown Theatre/University of Tennessee Theatre

The Clarence Brown Theatre, the professional theatre on the campus of the University of Tennessee – Knoxville invites applications for the House Manager/Assistant Box Office position.

The House Manager/Assistant Box Office Manager is directly responsible for managing all performance events when an audience is present. Serves as facilities liaison for the theatre and is responsible for all auditorium and lobby cleanliness, storage organization, and event set up. Tracks concessions, merchandise, and front of house supply budgets. Supervises front of house and volunteer staff members. Assists with all customer service-related ventures and is expected to serve as box office manager for some performances.

Event Management

  • Assists the Audience Experience Manager in enhancing the overall audience experience at the theatre.
  • Supervises cleanliness, security, and maintenance of restrooms, lobbies, auditoriums, and facilities.
  • Ensures patron parking is open and accessible.
  • Assists patrons with accessibility needs.
  • Enforces emergency procedures for fire, weather, or medical emergencies.
  • Box Office Assistant/Customer Service

  • Helps the Box Office Manager train new ticket clerks on policies and ticketing system, ensuring quality customer service.
  • Acts as daytime manager in the Box Office Manager's absence and during some performances.
  • Manages office supply inventory.
  • Reconciles cash drawers and processes refunds.
  • Facilities Liaison

  • Communicates special event parking needs to parking services.
  • Organizes storage of front-of-house supplies.
  • Sets up audience seating per NFPA and ADA requirements.
  • Arranges tables and seating for special events in theatre spaces and the lobby.
  • Budget Support

  • Tracks and orders concessions, merchandise, and front-of-house supplies.
  • Submits budget reports on concessions and merchandise sales and inventory per production.
  • Assists in tracking the front-of-house labor budget.
  • Staff and Volunteer Management

  • Conducts interviews, provides feedback, and performs reviews with the Box Office Manager and Audience Experience Manager.
  • Helps conduct staff training sessions, including CPR and AED certification.
  • Coordinates scheduling and training of front-of-house employees and volunteer ushers.


  • Qualifications

    Qualifications:

  • Manage stressful situations professionally, de-escalate customer issues effectively.
  • Strong writing and organizational skills.
  • Create and analyze sales reports.
  • Multitask, prioritize, and problem-solve.
  • Effective leadership to motivate part-time staff.
  • Interpret and analyze procedural documents and event instructions.
  • Ability to work primary nights and weekends.
  • Experience:

  • Minimum 3 years in customer service and front of house roles.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Availability for evenings and weekends.
  • Proficient in PC, Windows-based environment and Microsoft Office.
  • Front-of-house theatre and volunteer supervision experience.
  • Box Office operations experience.
  • Knowledge of current performing arts IT trends.
  • This is a non-exempt, MR06, full-time position with the University of Tennessee Department of Theatre’s Clarence Brown Theatre.
