The UE group is a matrixed organization designed to enhance library services through a cross-disciplinary and cross-functional approach. The Arts, Music, and Powell division brings together librarians and staff from three library locations. The unit supports research and teaching in a wide variety of subjects and at all levels, including specialized collections and services for art, architecture, theater, film and television, music, musicology, and ethnomusicology. Powell Library collaborates with campus partners focusing on undergraduate education initiatives, which build foundational research and writing skills in student scholars. The team consists of 11 FTE librarians and 3 FTE professional staff.
Position Summary
Reporting to the Director of Arts, Music, and Powell Libraries, the Instructional Design and Outreach Specialist (IDOS) collaborates with Arts, Music, and Powell colleagues, one of the UE functional teams, student employees, other IDOS colleagues, and across UCLA Library, with campus partners and instructors, and directly with students to create fully-scaled, sustainable solutions to foundational challenges in the research, writing, and creative process using a wide range of online learning tools and platforms. The IDOS follows an engaged instructional design process to design, develop, maintain, and iteratively improve and design scalable online learning and web page resources in support of research, teaching, and learning. The IDOS assesses, advocates for, and employs a wide range of tools and platforms, such as online module creation tools, native tools within the course management system Canvas (Bruin Learn), and tools for classroom engagement. The IDOS researches and proposes new tools for the Library to adopt, always keeping cost and sustainability of the tool top of mind. As part of this engaged instructional design process, the IDOS co-leads the WI+RE (Writing Instruction and Research Education) team, a group of Library student employees and other IDOS colleagues that design learning objects based on a learner-centered design driven process. The IDOS provides training and support for staff across UCLA Library interested in developing their instructional design and learning technology skills, and supports the production of online learning resources by a wide variety of staff. Under the direction of the Web Steering Team, the IDOS serves as a Lead Site Editor, generating original web content and leveraging text, images, and video to support the Library's web content strategy and continually improve the Library's online user experience. As Lead Site Editor, the IDOS provides support to Basic Editors, assists with training, and ensures that best practices are followed for the Library website, particularly as it pertains to WCAG and digital accessibility standards. The IDOS is responsible for the collaborative development and coordination of outreach initiatives for Arts, Music, and Powell Libraries, as well as collaboration with other departments across the Library. The IDOS participates on the social media team and coordinates content creation for the @uclalibrary accounts. The IDOS contributes to in-person and digital outreach efforts, such as coordinating the Stressbusters activities of Powell Library in collaboration with the larger cross-Library destress programming. In addition to the coordination of outreach initiatives, the IDOS designs print and digital materials, supports digital exhibits, and creates content for digital signage across the Library system. The IDOS collaborates closely with Campus Library Instructional Commuting (CLICC)/Digital Initiative and Instructional Technology (DIIT), and other library units to take a proactive role in identifying, implementing, and evaluating learning space and technology solutions and policies in a complex and changeful teaching and learning environment. The IDOS provides technology and operational support for learning spaces throughout Powell Library, including research services/consultation spaces, UE managed classrooms, Reading Room, and Rotunda. The IDOS serves on the LibApps team, providing admin support and training, particularly for the LibCal platform, setting up new accounts, providing training to users, and ensuring the platform is up to date.
