Furthermore, the resources of the UNC-NC State Rehabilitation Engineering Core (http://rec.bme.unc.edu/), Human Movement Science Program at UNC (http://hmsc.unc.edu), NSF ERC ASSIST Center at NC State, and NC State College of Veterinary Medicine provide powerful opportunities for Rehabilitation Engineering faculty to develop multidisciplinary and translational collaborations.

Our mission is to improve human quality of life, personal and work environments, and rehabilitation products and processes through careful study, analysis, research, and design of innovative technologies to benefit the people of North Carolina, the nation, and the world.

Essential Job Duties:

This position is for a tenure-track Assistant/Associate Professor in all areas related to Biomedical Engineering.

Biomedical Engineering is a supportive and highly collaborative environment. Our mission is to improve human quality of life through careful study, analysis, research, and design of innovative technologies to benefit the people of North Carolina and others whom we serve.

We seek outstanding candidates conducting research in any area of Biomedical Engineering, especially those that complement the department’s current strengths in Biomedical Microdevices, Rehabilitation Engineering, Biomedical Imaging, Pharmacoengineering, and Regenerative Medicine.

Successful candidates will have already established a highly competitive independent research program or will have demonstrated the clear potential to do so. Candidates must exhibit strong capacity for interdisciplinary collaboration with engineering faculty, basic science researchers, and/or clinical investigators. Candidates whose research demonstrates a clear pathway to commercialization and/or translation in human clinical populations will be viewed favorably.

The successful candidate will have a primary appointment at NC State University, with tenure home in the College of Engineering, and will have access to resources at both UNC-CH and NC State. The candidate’s laboratory will be in BME’s home in Engineering Building 3 on NC State’s Centennial Campus, housed in the center of the College of Engineering.

Other Responsibilities:

Candidates will be expected to contribute to undergraduate and graduate student education, likely teaching classes in areas of pharmacoengineering. Successful candidates are expected to establish active externally funded research programs and to achieve excellence in teaching and training at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

Minimum Education and Experience:

Qualified candidates should have a doctoral degree in Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or related areas, and have a track-record of excellence in scholarly activity since degree completion.
Scholarly activity is considered to include publishing research outcomes in refereed manuscripts, presenting research outcomes at scientific symposia, securing competitive funding to support research, obtaining patents to protect intellectual property, and leading fruitful interdisciplinary collaboration.

Other Required Qualifications:

  • Successful candidates must have a strong commitment to academic and research excellence.
  • Successful applicants will have already established a highly competitive independent research program, or will otherwise possess the clear potential to do so.
  • The candidate must have the ability to collaborate with basic researchers and/or clinical investigators.
  • Candidates should possess excellent teaching skills and an ability to attract external funding for and conduct research programs supportive of the Department’s thrust areas.
  • Excellent verbal and writing skills are required

Preferred Qualifications:

Evidence of excellence in teaching, mentoring, communication, and advising trainees at the undergraduate, graduate, and post-graduate levels is desired, as are leadership skills that support a strong interdisciplinary research program. Organization

NC State: Think and Do

NC State was founded with a purpose: to create economic, societal and intellectual prosperity for the people of North Carolina and the country. We began as a land-grant institution teaching the agricultural and mechanical arts. Today, we're a pre-eminent research enterprise with 12 colleges excelling in all major academic fields.

NC State studentsOur 34,000 high-performing students take what they learn in the classroom and apply it in the real world by conducting research, working in internships and co-ops, and performing acts of world-changing service. That experiential education ensures that they leave here ready to lead the workforce. NC State's 13:1 student-faculty ratio is one of the reasons why we're the best college for your money in North Carolina (Money) and the No. 5 best value among public universities nationally (U.S. News & World Report).

Overcoming Challenges, Improving Lives

NC State is one of only two universities in the nation leading two National Science Foundation Engineering Research Centers — one developing wearable, self-powered health monitors, and the other researching smart-grid technology. We’re also leading interdisciplinary efforts to curb nuclear proliferation, help farmers confront climate change and build a new American manufacturing sector.

Our research doesn't just get published in a journal or sit on a shelf; it makes an impact. NC State is No. 6 nationwide in commercialization agreements based on university research, and we're No. 2 among universities without a medical school. Our Cooperative Extension Service provides research-based information to citizens in all 100 North Carolina counties. In addition, our industrial extension unit — Industry Expansion Solutions — has created an economic benefit for the state's manufacturers averaging $149 million per year since 2005.

Bright Minds Creating a Bold Future

NC State’s 9,000 faculty and staff are world leaders in their fields, bridging the divides between academic disciplines and training high-caliber students to meet tomorrow’s challenges. NC State students won two Goldwater scholarships, five Fulbright scholarships, one Churchill scholarship and a record-breaking 25 National Science Foundation graduate research fellowships in the 2016-2017 academic year. In addition, 25 faculty are members of the National Academies.

More than 130 years after its creation, NC State continues to make its founding purpose a reality. Every day, our career-ready graduates and world-leading faculty make the fruits of learning and discovery available to people across the state, throughout the nation and around the world.
