Position Summary

The Financial Aid Counselor has a crucial role in helping students and families navigate the financial aid process, making higher education more accessible and affordable. This position requires a knowledgeable and empathetic individual who can offer personalized guidance, interpret complex financial information, and advocate for students' financial needs. The Financial Aid Counselor works with different parties to manage financial aid programs, ensure compliance with regulations, and assist students in reaching their educational goals.

Positively impact student enrollment by providing excellent service to students and families.

Essential Functions

Financial Aid Advising - 25%

  • Provide comprehensive financial aid counseling to prospective and current students and their families.
  • Assist students in understanding their financial aid options, including scholarships, grants, loans, and work-study programs.
  • Help students assess their eligibility for financial aid and develop a personalized financial plan to fund their education.
  • Application Assistance - 20%
  • Assist students in navigating the financial aid application process, which includes filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and other necessary forms.
  • Check financial aid applications for accuracy and completeness, and reach out to students to address any discrepancies or missing information.
  • Award Packaging - 15%
  • Evaluate financial aid eligibility based on federal, state, and institutional guidelines.
  • Determine students’ financial needs and package financial aid awards accordingly, considering available funds, program requirements, and individual circumstances.
  • Communicate award decisions to students and provide detailed explanations of their financial aid packages.
  • Financial Literacy Education - 10%
  • Conduct workshops, presentations, and individual counseling sessions to educate students and families about financial literacy topics such as budgeting, responsible borrowing, managing student loans, and understanding financial aid terms and conditions.
  • Empower students to make informed decisions about their finances and academic pursuits.
  • Compliance and Reporting - 5%
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and institutional financial aid regulations.
  • Stay updated on policy changes, maintain accurate records, and assist with data collection for reporting purposes.
  • Student Support - 25%
  • Support and advocate for students facing financial challenges in accessing higher education.
  • Identify and connect students with needed support services and resources, such as academic advising, counseling, and emergency financial assistance.
  • Collaborate with campus partners to promote student success and retention.
  • Experience and Education Required

  • Associate or Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (e.g., Education, Counseling, Finance, Business Administration).
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to effectively interact with diverse populations and communicate complex financial information clearly and understandably.
  • Excellent problem-solving and decision-making abilities, committed to providing exceptional customer service and support to students and families.
  • Proficiency in computer applications and software related to financial aid administration, student information systems, and database management.
  • Familiarity with best practices in financial literacy education, student advising, and student support services.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, with a collaborative and student-centered approach to achieving departmental goals and objectives.
  • Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Flexibility to adapt to changing priorities, workload demands, and regulatory requirements in a fast-paced environment.
