The University of California, Office of the President (UCOP) seeks a diplomatic, collaborative, and influential leader to serve as its next Associate Vice President (AVP) for Strategy and Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion. Reporting to the Vice President of Systemwide Human Resources, the AVP will direct systemwide human resources strategy, executive recruitment, workforce planning and development, and policy functions, all through an equity, diversity, and inclusion lens. Their oversight will directly impact immediate and long-term systemwide operations through the implementation of initiatives and programs for approximately 200 executives and 140,000 staff across the UC system.

Founded in 1868, the UC system is recognized as one of the world's largest and most successful academic institutions, with a tripartite mission of research, teaching, and public service. The ten campuses that make up the UC system – Berkeley, Davis, Irvine, Los Angeles, Merced, Riverside, San Diego, San Francisco, Santa Barbara, and Santa Cruz – collectively enroll approximately 280,000 students and are supported by more than 227,000 faculty and staff, and 2 million alumni living and working around the world. Another half million people benefit from UC's continuing education courses each year, as well as from research centers and educational programs operating throughout the state. UC's scope extends beyond its campus locations, with its national laboratories, medical centers, and outreach programs in neighboring communities, throughout California, and around the world.

The Associate Vice President will provide strategic and collaborative leadership that best supports the University and its various locations while also balancing their distinct needs and systems. They will have excellent listening, communication, multi-tasking, critical-thinking, and analytical skills in order to foster impactful relationships with various stakeholders across the University community, including but not limited to the President, Board of Regents, federal, and state agencies.

To be successful, the Associate Vice President for Strategy and Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion will address the following opportunities and challenges:
  • Provide leadership to a diverse service-oriented group of units serving a broad range of constituents at the UCOP and across the locations
  • Advance broad-based strategy into actionable steps at both the system level and the locations, implementing scalable programs that meet the needs of a wide variety of locations
  • Lead initiatives through influence and persuasion, paying close attention to the needs of individual locations while creating and implementing a consistent set of policies and programs in support of the system-wide mission of the UCOP
  • Embed the values and practices of equity, diversity, and inclusion into all aspects of HR strategy, policy, workforce planning and development, and executive recruitment
Compensation and Location

UCOP is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. Salary offers are determined based on candidate qualifications and experience. The full salary range shows the growth potential for this position and the pay scale is the budgeted salary that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position, which for this position is $300,000 - $330,000, commensurate with experience.
