The ideal candidate will share Madera Community College’s commitment to educating its racially and socioeconomically diverse student population. For the 2022-2023 academic year, we enrolled over 9,400 students in which 68% identify as Latinx, 8% as Asian/Pacific Islander, 3% as Black/African American, 17% as White, 1% as American Indian/Alaska Native, and 3% as multiracial. Providing instruction in Licensed Vocational Nursing (LVN) and coordinating the LVN program, the instructor/coordinator will be responsible for:

  • Providing leadership in the organization, administration, and compliance of the LVN program;
  • Serving as the liaison with the Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians (BVNPT) and other regulatory agencies to ensure program complies with established criteria standards;
  • Serving as a liaison with off-site facilities for clinical instruction in addition to continuously seeking additional clinical locations and maintaining positive relations with partners;
  • Maintaining program accreditation with the various governing agencies including evaluating the program and preparing documents for operations of the LVN program;
  • Preparing application renewals, facility approval applications and coordinating clinical orientations for faculty as necessary;
  • Staying abreast of current educational and health trends;
  • Providing leadership in curriculum evaluation and revision for currency and relevancy;
  • Assessing, revising and submitting curriculum and instructional plans to stay up-to-date with industry trends and ensure program compliance with governing agencies;
  • Participating in securing regular, adjunct, and substitute faculty, when necessary and preparing the faculty approval applications with the governing agency and clinical sites;
  • Supervising student selection procedures, facilitating orientations, monitoring enrollment and preparing approval forms for students to be at clinical sites;
  • Supervising the maintenance of student records including preparing documents for audits and completing documentation for student completers;
  • Monitoring clinical lab groups;
  • Monitoring enrollment and making recommendations according to trends and fiscal demands;
  • Managing program budgets and developing budget recommendations;
  • Communicating with facility administrators and evaluating clinical facilities;
  • Conducting regular faculty meetings including leading program advisory committee meetings with community partners;
  • Mediating issues involving students and staff;
  • Be available for students including supporting efforts to facilitate career connections for students;
  • Preparing annual reports to the BVNPT and other health careers related reports as required;
  • Teaching Licensed Vocational Nursing (LVN) and related courses, implementing, evaluating, or modifying curriculum;
  • Responsible for the instructional duties of the LVN program as assigned, including preparing for and instructing theory classes and hospital clinical laboratory experiences;
  • Taking lead or team member responsibilities in designated clinical settings;
  • Serving on and attending department, college, and district committees as needed;
  • Participating in program review, student learning outcome development and assessment to improve student learning;
  • Teaching and working assignments in a variety of instructional settings and times, including evening and/or weekends, on-line or off-campus and large group instruction classes as needed;
  • Otherwise fulfilling all of the duties and responsibilities of faculty as required by Administrative Regulation 7122; and
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

All candidates must have evidence of responsiveness to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, as these factors relate to the need for equity-minded practice within the classroom; and

  • Hold a current California active license as a Registered Nurse; and

  • Bachelor’s degree from an approved school; and

  • Have a minimum of three years experience as a registered nurse; one year shall be in teaching or clinical supervision, or a combination thereof, in a state approved registered nursing or vocational or practical nursing, or psychiatric technician school within the last five years; or a minimum of three years experience in nursing administration or nursing education within the last five years; and

  • Have completed a course or courses offered by an approved school with instruction in administration, teaching, and curriculum development.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Experience and skill incorporating elements of diversity, equity, and inclusion into all areas of responsibility;
  • Recent experience working with African American, Asian/Pacific Islander, Latinx, Native American, and other racially minoritized students in the classroom and an understanding of how historical patterns of exclusion of these groups in higher education shape patterns of participation and outcomes;
  • Experience working with students of various cultural, gender, age, socioeconomic, and ethnic backgrounds including students with disabilities;
  • Willingness to examine and remediate one’s instructional, relational, and classroom practices to more effectively engage and support racially minoritized students;
  • Related work and professional experience;
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with students and staff;
  • Demonstrated ability to work with computers, and other technologies, which are utilized in providing high-quality instruction and support to students;
  • Willingness to work with community and campus organizations;
  • Experience in general nursing with a minimum of five (5) years relevant clinical experience and two (2) recent years of acute care experience in the clinical area of instruction;
  • Preparation through education and/or experience in providing quality instruction in theory and clinical settings;
  • Demonstrated ability to objectively evaluate student performance in theory as well as clinical classes;
  • Experience in providing instruction in medical-surgical nursing;
  • Demonstrated ability to work well in diverse settings (pediatric, psychiatric, perinatal, and medical-surgical);
  • Experience in or potential for matriculation in pediatric, perinatal, and psychiatric specialties;
  • Demonstrated ability to develop collegial relationships with peers;
  • Demonstrated ability to be an effective liaison and to maintain a harmonious relationship and acceptance into clinical facilities (hospitals, clinics, subacute areas); and
  • Knowledge of the community college and its mission and goals.

Conditions of Employment:

178 duty days per year.

Salary and Benefits:

Starting annual salary is $70,302 – $105,838 based on education and experience. An annual doctoral stipend of $2,419 is available. In addition, the District offers an attractive fringe benefit package including medical, dental, and vision coverage for the employee and dependents, and life insurance. Employees are also members of the California State Teacher’s Retirement System (CalSTRS).

Selection Procedure:

Applications will be screened by Human Resources for completeness and to determine which applicants meet the minimum qualifications as stated in the job announcement.

From the applicants who meet the minimum qualifications and who have submitted all the required documents by the closing date and time listed on the job announcement, a selection advisory committee will review the candidates who are best qualified based on the minimum and desirable qualifications then determine who will be invited to interview.

The selection advisory committee will rate responses to the interview questions, teaching demonstration, and writing prompt (if applicable). Based on this rating, a small number of applicants will be selected as the “recommended candidates”. These candidates will be forwarded to the Vice President and College President for final interviews.

A hiring recommendation will be made by the College President and forwarded to the Board of Trustees of State Center Community College District for final approval.

About the College Center
Madera Community College at Oakhurst is a satellite campus of Madera Community College. It is located just 20 minutes from the South entrance to Yosemite National Park and just minutes away from the Sierra National Forest. The campus provides opportunity and access to higher education for a geographically isolated population in Eastern Madera County. The campus currently serves Oakhurst, Mariposa County, Coarsegold, North Fork and the surrounding communities with over 75 courses in a variety of study areas. The center is slated to open a new permanent campus in Fall 2021.

State Center Community College District (SCCCD) was formed in 1964 when it assumed control of Fresno City College and Reedley College. SCCCD serves approximately one million people and 18 unified and high school districts in more than 5,500 square miles of urban and rural territory, including most of Fresno and Madera counties and portions of Kings and Tulare counties. SCCCD is governed by a seven-member board of trustees who represent seven trustee areas. Total district enrollment for the fall semester 2012 is over 34,000 students. SCCCD is a merit system district with over 2,300 faculty and classified staff represented by the California School Employees Association (CSEA) and the American Federation of Teachers (AFT). The total operating budget for SCCCD in 2012-13 is $168 million. 

Fresno City College, established in 1910, enrolls in excess of 22,000 students and offers more than 100 associate of arts and science degree programs and 60 certificate of achievement programs in vocational/occupational areas. Reedley College, established in 1926, is located in Reedley (approximately 25 miles southeast of Fresno) and enrolls approximately 6,200 students in a variety of courses and degree programs in occupational education and the arts and sciences. SCCCD operates three educational centers with a combined enrollment of approximately 8,300 students. The Willow International, Madera and Oakhurst centers offer programs in general education for transfer and two-year degrees. In addition, the district offers occupational and technical training at its Career and Technology Center and the Training Institute.
