The Department of Neurosurgery is seeking a Lab Animal Specialist to join our team. Responsible for the cleanliness, nutrition and safety for laboratory animal in the Department of Neurosurgery. The ideal candidate will work closely with the research and clinical faculty members to conduct basic science research.

Duties:

    Responsible for a major function of the laboratory animal faculty such as surgery or radiology.Supervises technicians working in a group of related locations, to include but not limited to  determining work priorities, and overseeing quality of work performed. Assists in selecting, training, evaluating, and disciplining subordinate personnel.Assists the supervisor in the receipt of incoming animals, to include but not limited to performing physical examinations, collecting biological materials for laboratory tests, administering medication, and observing animals during a quantitative period.Responsible for obtaining history, collecting biological samples, and assisting in necropsies by exposing body cavities, dissecting tissue, and recording findings when an animal is ill or dies.Performs technical tasks in the operation of a major specialty area, to include but not limited to daily observations of animal health, collection of cultures, and biological specimens for diagnostic testing, diagnostic molecular (ELISA) bacteriological, biological assays, bone marrow aspirations, complete blood count, white cell differential, electrophoresis, blotting, chromatography, and/or PCR and DNA extractions.Identifies areas of laboratory animal care where techniques can be improved or problems can be resolved. Recommends changes to the supervisor.Performs related duties as assigned or as required to successfully perform the function of the position.


Job Location

Required Education: Associate's Degree in a Biological Science, Animal Science, or closely related field AND:

  • 24 months of laboratory animal facility experience.
Equivalency/Substitution: Will accept 24 months experience in a laboratory animal facility in lieu of the Associate's Degree for a total of 48 months experience.

Skills:

  • Knowledge of all applicable requirements, regulations, and laws. Ability to communicate verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to work independently and with a team. 
  • Ability to identify, address issues and deficiencies, and implement effective solutions. 
  • Ability to handle all types of animals. Basic computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook, and Excel). 
  • Ability to work flexible hours including weekends and holidays.

Certifications:

  • An American Association of Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) Certification as a Laboratory Animal Technologist Certification (LATG).

Advertised Physical Requirements:

  • Physical: Standing for prolonged periods. Lift up to 30 pounds on a regular basis. Reaching, bending, stooping, and walking. Manual dexterity.
  • Environmental: Animal Facility. Handling all types of animals and exposure to bites and scratches.
