Founded in 1975, Literacy for Life is an independent 501© 3 organization located in William and Mary’s School of Education. Literacy for Life’s mission is to empower adults by building foundational skills for success in life and work. Literacy for Life provides professional instruction and volunteer tutoring in reading, writing, math, English language, citizenship, computer skills, high school completion (GED and NEDP), health literacy, workplace readiness, and preparation for post-secondary programs.

Position Summary:

Literacy for Life has recently expanded to serve adult learners in the Lower Peninsula. This 16-hour a week position is for an Instructor at Literacy for Life’s Peninsula Center, 600 Butler Farm Road, Hampton.

• Prepare and teach 4 (1.5 hour each) in person ESL classes
• Prepare and teach 2 (1.5 hour each) virtual classes
• Plan lessons which utilize a variety of instructional techniques, to include individualized instruction, pairing, group work, and whole class instruction (7 hours of planning a week)
• Oversee and manage any volunteer teacher aides in the classroom and ensure they have the teaching resources needed to facilitate small group and/or individual activities
• Maintain and report accurate learner attendance
• Contact students who have missed several consecutive lessons
• Ensure that the classroom environment is welcoming and conducive to learning
• Assist with intakes and assessments when needed

Required Qualifications:

College degree required. Excellent interpersonal, writing, and presentation skills. Ability to multi-task and work collaboratively. Experience as an ESL instructor, working with diverse populations and/or experience working with adults.
