Job Description

This is an opportunity for a postdoctoral research position in the Human Performance and Nutritional Research Institute (HPNRI) at Oklahoma State University (OSU) and contribute to the cutting-edge research in human performance and nutrition. The institute is designed to understand human performance and nutrition through creating human digital twins for personalization of human performance and nutritional recommendations. We are combining wearable technologies, computer vision, and psychological surveys to harness artificial intelligence to understand personalization in the field of human performance and nutrition. The post-doctoral fellow will be actively engaged in HPNRI projects and will collaborate with faculty and staff in the institute, on-campus, other universities, and industry.

Our transdisciplinary research spans the fields of human physiology, psychology, nutrition, sleep science, and computer science and aims to understand inter- and intra-individual differences in responses to various exercise and nutritional interventions. These responses are likely multifactorial and have largely remained unexplored and our team aims to understand these factors to help decision-making to personalize human performance and nutritional interventions. We are integrating information from commercially available wearable technologies, open-source wearable technologies, Brain Computer Interface (BCI) technologies, computer vision, psychological surveys, and exercise physiology laboratory equipment to better understand factors that explain inter- and intra-individual responses to exercise and nutritional interventions. You will join a dynamic and multi-disciplinary group of exercise physiologists, biomechanists, exercise psychologists, computer scientists, biomedical engineers, neuroscientists, and data scientists in developing cutting-edge technologies that leverage advanced signal processing and time-series N of 1 prediction modeling. Our group has experience in academia, industry and start-up and we are driven to understand inter- and intra-individual interventions to improve human performance.

Key Accountabilities and Responsibilities:

  • Lead sponsored research projects that align with the mission of HPNRI, Innovation Foundation and OSU.
  • Collaborate with researchers at the institute, on campus, other universities, and in industry to conduct innovative research.
  • Publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals and present findings at national and international conferences.
  • Contribute to the dissemination of findings to the non-scientific community.

Under the guidance of Dr. Boolani and the team you will:

  • Perform data mining, develop algorithms, as well as analysis involving physiological, biomechanical, and psychological time-series data.
  • Maintain the laboratory’s computational infrastructure and analysis tools.
  • Develop pipelines for data cleaning and pre-processing as well as data integrity to optimize and correct errors, inconsistencies, or missing data needed for analyses.
  • Assist in acquiring and maintaining data from multiple sources, including multimodal physiological time series, biomechanical time series, psychological surveys, voice, and video data.
  • Organize, support, and maintain a central large research database with various data types including multimodal physiological time series, psychological surveys, voice, and video data.
  • Perform N of 1 time-series analyses.
  • Ensure confidentiality for sensitive data as per institutional guidelines.
  • Collaborate with undergraduate, graduate students, faculty, and staff.

This position is funded for two years full-time (100% time) with the potential for an extension.

Position Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • PhD in field related to computational biology/neuroscience, statistics, mathematics, computer science, sports science, or similar quantitative field.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in programming in Python and ability to create shells for automated data analyses.
  • Knowledge or experience with machine learning and statistical analysis.
  • Knowledge or experience with relational databases (SQL, NoSQL), and electronic health records (EHR)
  • Ability to work independently and determine when assistance from designated supervisor is needed.
  • Organizational and efficiency skills, including planning and decision-making abilities to complete assigned duties promptly, attention to detail, logical thinking/analytical abilities, and problem-solving skills.
  • Enthusiasm, adaptability, good communication skills, and ability to work with diverse teams.
  • Ability to work and interact positively with people from diverse backgrounds.

Candidates must possess desired qualifications by the time of appointment and the candidate’s CV and cover letter must list qualifications (or if pending) upon submission.

Minimum Knowledge and Experience:

  • Strong research skills, including experimental design, data collection, data analysis, and statistical techniques.
  • Experience in applying scientific knowledge to practical situations.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for scientific publications and presentations.
  • Experience in conducting research studies, including clinical trials, epidemiological studies, or laboratory experiments.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively collaborate with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Understanding and implementing ethical standards related to research involving human subjects.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to convey complex information to key stakeholders.
  • Desire to apply previous academic background to the field of human performance and nutrition.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge and familiarity working with Jupyter notebooks and familiar with version control (GitHub/Git)
  • Knowledge or experience with deep learning frameworks, e.g., TensorFlow, Keras, or PyTorch.
  • Knowledge of Natural Language Processing techniques.
  • Knowledge of dynamic modeling methods
  • Experience in direct data management and analysis.
