WHAT YOU'LL DO

Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, a Library Technician assists in coordinating the daily operation of the library, performs a variety of technical and clerical library support functions, and trains and provides work direction to assigned staff and student workers.
There is currently one full-time (11 months/year, 100%) vacancy located at Ventura College-East Campus.
This recruitment is being conducted to establish a list of eligible candidates that will be used to fill district-wide, current and upcoming, temporary and regular vacancies for the duration of the list, not to exceed one year.

WHERE YOU'LL WORK
Established in 1925, Ventura College was one of the first community colleges in California and currently has an enrollment of 14,500 students. Located approximately 60 miles north of Los Angeles and 30 miles south of Santa Barbara, the 112-acre campus is set in the rolling hills of Ventura - so close to the ocean that there is a clear view of the Channel Islands from several spots on campus.

Representative Duties

Assist in overseeing the day-to-day operations of the library; assist with planning, coordinating and directing workflow activities including scheduling and coordinating work assignments of assigned staff and student workers; implement library policies and procedures; create and maintain procedural documentation for the department; suggest changes in policies and work procedures as appropriate. EPerform a variety of technical library work in areas such as processing, circulation, inventory, physical and digital reserves, web page maintenance, and the preparation of requisitions for books, serials, media, and other library materials and supplies. ECollaborate with faculty to perform technical work in the acquisition of library materials, such as pre-order research and verification of bibliographic data, identify vendors and locate vendor codes, place and monitor orders, receive and input new materials, prepare materials for introduction into the library collection, distribute and maintain library materials, process invoices and track expenditures, etc. EPerform technical work in the copy cataloging and classification process of library materials according to established procedures; assist with original cataloging; perform catalog cleanup and maintenance; resolve cataloging issues; perform regular inventories of the collection; provide cataloging direction and assistance to staff as needed. E Assist patrons with complex library concerns; determine patron liability for damaged materials and resolve complex patron fee and billing issues; refer customer service problems according to established procedures. E Prepare and maintain a variety of reports, records, and surveys such as financial, circulation, and usage data such as delivery records, encumbrance records, inventory records, attendance reports, circulation reports, etc.; compile, prepare, and maintain statistical reports. E Ensure library facilities are available and operating properly; report hardware and software issues to appropriate departments for repair; report facility damages, and maintenance issues; oversee the closure of areas when required. E Assist patrons in the use of library resources, facilities, and equipment; locate, recommend, and retrieve materials; respond to on-site and electronic library-related inquiries. E Provide training, guidance, and technical work direction to assigned staff and student workers. E Manage library resources by utilizing library interfaces, such as acquisitions, serials, cataloging, circulation, inventory, requisitions, invoice data, and reserves modules within the integrated library system or library service platform; identify, create, update, and maintain library holdings. E Work with vendors and publishers on orders, status of requests, and payment functions; resolve invoice issues and related discrepancies; maintain appropriate vendor and publisher support files. ECoordinate purchasing and inventory of library supplies and equipment. EWork collaboratively and professionally with faculty, staff, students, and stakeholders from diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, and ethnic communities. EDemonstrate cultural humility, sensitivity, and equity-mindedness in working with individuals from diverse communities; model inclusive behaviors; and achieve equity in assignment-related outcomes. E Perform related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications


Graduation from high school AND four years of experience in circulation, acquisitions, or copy cataloging. Library experience preferred.
ORAn associate degree from a recognized college or university in library science or a related field AND three years of experience in circulation, acquisitions, or copy cataloging. Library experience preferred.ORA bachelor's degree in library science or a related field AND two years of experience in circulation, acquisitions, or copy cataloging. Library experience preferred.ORA master's degree in library science or a related field AND one year of experience in circulation, acquisitions, or copy cataloging. Library experience preferred.

EXAMINATION AND SELECTION PROCESS:

The examination process may consist of any of the following components:

A) Training and Experience Evaluation = Qualifying (pass/fail)

B) Technical Interview = 100% weighting on final score

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE (T&E) EVALUATION:

A T&E is an assessment of training and experience, beyond the minimum requirements, that has prepared the candidate for the position as evidenced in the application materials. Please be sure to answer every component of each supplemental question as your responses will be scored and serve as your score on the training and experience (T&E) evaluation.

The candidates with the highest passing scores on the T&E will be invited to the technical interview.

Duration of work experience is calculated based off a standard 40-hour full-time work week. Part-time work experience will be prorated based on a 40-hour full-time work week. When completing the supplemental questionnaire (if applicable), outline in detail your education, training (such as classes, seminars, workshops), and experience.

ELIGIBILITY LIST:

Upon completion of the examination, the eligibility list will be compiled by combining the final examination score with applicable seniority and veteran's credits, if any. The candidates will be ranked according to their total score on the eligibility list. Certification will be made from the highest three ranks of the eligibility list. This eligibility list will be used to fill current vacancies for up to one year from the date of the technical interview.

PROBATIONARY PERIOD:

All appointments made from eligibility lists for initial appointment or for promotion, with certain exceptions, shall be probationary for a period of six (6) months or one hundred thirty (130) days of paid service, whichever is longer. Classified management, police, and designated executive classifications shall be probationary for a period of one (1) year of paid service from initial appointment or promotion.
