Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit:

UNC Global Affairs hosts the Duke-UNC Rotary Peace Center, one of seven Rotary Peace Centers worldwide, all supported by Rotary International. Rotary Peace Fellows at UNC-Chapel Hill are enrolled in and across a range of academic programs and professional schools at UNC-Chapel Hill, while at Duke they are enrolled in the Master of International Development Policy (MIDP) graduate degree. The Rotary Peace Program targets globally diverse and qualified early to mid-career professionals from the international organizations, the public sector, civil society and those interested in changing careers. The program strives to enhance the knowledge and skills of early to mid-career professionals primarily from low-income and middle-income countries. The Rotary Peace Program also educates those from high-income countries who plan to dedicate their lives to conflict prevention and sustainable international development that focuses on peace and prosperity for all. All Rotary Peace Fellows at Duke and UNC are international students. Students have at least 3 to 5 years of professional, peacebuilding and/or development-related experience. The average number of years of work experience is 7. Started in 2002, the Rotary Peace Program has trained more than 1,700 leaders in peacebuilding and development, of whom 177 have graduated from UNC or UNC. The UNC Global Studies M.A. program is a two-year interdisciplinary ‘applied research’ degree that combines scholarly rigor and practical skills. Students enrolled in the program will focus on analysis of trans-regional and trans-national themes, events, and processes that affect states and societies around the world. Students in the Global Studies M.A. program select one of the following thematic concentrations: * Global Politics, Institutions, and Societies * Global Economics and Development * Global Migration The program’s courses focus on issues with contemporary global significance and policy relevance. Global Studies is an emerging discipline, and UNC-Chapel Hill is at the forefront of defining the field and evolving methodological approaches. The educational objectives of the program are to: 1. Highlight issues of current and emerging global significance 2. Prepare current and future leaders with knowledge and conceptual skills needed for careers in international work 3. Provide an education that trains individuals to understand and respond to the nature of global change.

Position Summary:

The UNC Global Studies Curriculum is seeking applicants for a Temporary, Part-Time Instructor/Visiting Lecturer with the Duke-UNC Rotary Peace Program to teach a course entitled Theory and Practice of Conflict Transformation. This non-regular-rank, non-tenure-track position, renewable annually, is intended to bring qualified practitioners to the university classroom to provide students with knowledge about practical applications of peacebuilding and conflict transformation theory and to build students’ skills in applying knowledge to real-world circumstances

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Candidates must have a post-baccalaureate degree or experience/expertise commensurate with an advanced degree. Specifically, candidates should have demonstrated academic and/or practical experience in topics related to peacebuilding and/or development (civic engagement, social justice, negotiation, for example) and be able to teach graduate courses related to conflict transformation.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:

Preferred candidates will have university teaching experience, a strong commitment to working with students in the classroom and on projects, and high personal motivation and responsibility toward maintaining the integrity of the learning environment and process.

Location: UNC is located in the heart of Chapel Hill, the best college town in America! It's a friendly town of about 40,000 in the geographical center of North Carolina. Chapel Hill is at the western point of the Research Triangle, an area of about one million people, comprised of Chapel Hill, the cities of Durham and Raleigh, and the Research Triangle Park, home of many corporate offices and scientific research centers. Carolina is about 30 miles from the state capital, Raleigh, and 20 minutes from Raleigh-Durham International Airport.

Technological facilities: Students find multiple uses for Carolina's state-of-the-art technological resources. The MetaLab oversees the development of SunSITE, one of the world's busiest digital library and electronic publishing projects.

Students may open e-mail accounts, and many use campus computer resources to construct personal Web pages. Students in residence halls have hardwired network connections to the Internet and cable television in their rooms. At the ATN Training center, students may take classes on software packages and utilities. Computer labs are available for student use all over campus.

Carolina Computing Initiative: Beginning with the freshman class of 2000, undergraduates must purchase laptop computers. The University has arranged for IBM to offer computers at excellent prices.
