The Department of Rhetoric and Writing Studies in the College of Arts and Letters at San Diego State University is accepting applications for their lecturer pool.

We welcome applications from prospective temporary faculty with expertise or experience in the following areas:

  • Rhetoric and Writing Studies, including first-year composition, advanced composition, technical communication, professional writing, and business writing

Temporary appointments may be either full- or part-time. Appointments from the part-time pool are often made just prior to the start of the academic term, so applicants must be available on very short notice. The Fall term begins mid-August and ends late-December; the Spring term begins mid-January and ends mid-May. Opportunities for teaching during the Summer Sessions may also be available. Initial appointments are typically one semester or one academic year, to be renewed contingent on satisfactory evaluations and continuing availability of work.   • Graduate degree in Rhetoric and Writing Studies or closely related field
  • University teaching experience
  • Demonstrated currency in subject matter
  • Demonstrated experience in and/or commitment to teaching and working effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and members of underrepresented groups*
  • *Candidates must satisfy two or more of the eight SDSU Building on Inclusive Excellence (BIE) criteria:

  • are committed to engaging in service with underrepresented populations within the discipline,
  • have demonstrated knowledge of barriers for underrepresented students and faculty within the discipline,
  • have experience or have demonstrated commitment to teaching and mentoring underrepresented students,
  • have experience or have demonstrated commitment to integrating understanding of underrepresented populations and communities into research,
  • have experience in or have demonstrated commitment to extending knowledge of opportunities and challenges in achieving artistic/scholarly success to members of an underrepresented group,
  • have experience in or have demonstrated commitment to research that engages underrepresented communities,
  • have expertise or demonstrated commitment to developing expertise in cross-cultural communication and collaboration, and/or
  • have research interests that contribute to diversity and equal opportunity in higher education.

  • Recent student evaluations, ideally within the past three years (new employees only)
  • Recent course syllabus and writing assignment prompt (new employees only)
  • Unofficial transcripts (new employees only)
  • Optional

  • Letters of recommendation (new employees only)
  • Names, phone numbers, and e-mail addresses of three professional references (new employees only)
  • Initial rank and salary for lecturer faculty are based on professional experience and educational background and are determined by the hiring department. Most new appointees are hired at the Lecturer A or B rank and placed at the beginning of the range.

    As of July 2023, the classification salary ranges for the respective ranks are:

    Lecturer A: $5,007 - $6,359
    Lecturer B: $5,925 - $12,594
    Lecturer C: $6,500 - $13,831
    Lecturer D: $8,184 - $14,487
