Job Description Summary / TWC Summary:

JOB SUMMARY:The adjunct instructor for the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and is responsible for supporting and advancing the mission and goals of the university and the college/school in all academic, scholarly and student support activities. English adjunct instructors typically teach general education courses, (i.e., Freshman Composition I and II, etc.), counsels and advises students on course requirements and participates in department/college activities for the advancement of departmental goals and student success.

Essential Duties Summary:

  • Supports and advances the mission and goals of the university and the college/school in all academic and scholarly activities.
  • Provide guidance and feedback to students to enhance their written communication abilities, including grammar, organization, and critical thinking.
  • Establishes and holds office hours for students to receive counseling and advice on class requirements.
  • Develop and administer assessments, including essays, exams, and other assignments, to evaluate student progress and provide constructive feedback for improvement.
  • Participates in college/department activities requiring faculty presence.
  • Utilize creative and innovative teaching approaches to engage students and enhance learning outcomes, such as incorporating multimedia resources, collaborative projects, and experiential learning opportunities.
  • Foster an inclusive and dynamic learning environment by leading thought-provoking discussions and encouraging active participation among students.

Hiring Range:

Commensurate with experience.

Education:

Master’s degree (M.A.) from an accredited college or university at the time of appointment. Doctorate degree is preferred.

Required Licensing/Certification:

Proficiency in technology, particularly Blackboard, is essential.
Valid Texas Driver’s License preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of:

  • Standard for principles, methods and procedures in an area and determines long-term direction under his/her guidance. May involve a level of expertise that is recognized both internally and nationally as top notch in the field.
  • Multiple disciplines.
  • Microsoft Office Professional or similar applications.
Skill in:
  • Problem-solving and decision-making.
  • Command of technical and functional procedures, processes and subject matter in a job family or professional discipline to handle most situations and lead and/or review the work of others in multiple job classifications performing diverse responsibilities.
  • Subject matter expert in a professional discipline or function; understood to be the “go-to” expert on complex methods and procedures.
  • Strong time management.
  • Both verbal and written communication.

Ability to:
  • Prepare detailed reports.
  • Lead the development or modification of work procedures in the discipline or function for virtually any situation.
  • Work independently.
