Primary Purpose of Department:

The mission of the Student Assistance and Support Services (SASS) office is to assist, support and advocate for students experiencing a broad range of issues, concerns or challenges interfering with a student’s ability to be successful academically or personally. Student issues and/or behaviors managed by the SASS office can be extremely challenging, volatile, highly sensitive, and potentially threatening to the safety and welfare of the campus community.

Primary Purpose of Position:

The Assistant Director for Basic Needs (ADBN) will oversee the University’s Jamil Niner Student Pantry (Pantry). The position will provide development and leadership in all aspects of the Jamil Niner Student Pantry and provide services designed to minimize the impact of food insecurity on students’ academics and personal well-being through case management, various interventions, referrals, and follow-up services. The position assists in planning, coordinating, implementing, and assessing programs and services designed to identify and meet students’ basic needs. The focus of this position is to perform various functions to coordinate the day-to-day operations of the Jamil Niner Student Pantry. The position will be the primary lead in managing a collegiate food pantry and will coordinate food and hygiene items distribution to our campus populations, schedule student staff, and provide primary oversight of the Jamil Niner Student Pantry hours.

Summary of Position Responsibilities:

  • Operates and manages the Jamil Niner Student Pantry.
  • Engage in marketing efforts, including creating promotional and information materials in collaboration with the Student Affairs Marketing Team.
  • Project, monitor, and maintain food and hygiene supplies by coordinating food donations and deliveries.
  • Assign and check the work of student staff and volunteers as they perform the following tasks: stocking, inventory, food distribution, cleaning, and organizing.
  • Maintain and coordinate student volunteers.
  • Serve on committees as a food insecurity resource to the campus community.
  • Assess students’ needs and eligibility for emergency funds such as Student Emergency Housing, Mental Health, and Student Emergency Funds.
  • Supervise student workers, trainees, interns, and volunteers in the Jamil Niner Student Pantry.
  • Serve as a member of the campuswide Basic Needs Committee.
  • Works with key staff in the Development Office on potential fundraising projects for program enhancement.
  • Coordinates donations, deliveries, and disbursements of food items to the Pantry.
  • Acts as a liaison to our local food banks and other community partners addressing food insecurity.
  • Work with staff on outreach education programs to educate and raise awareness of campus support services focused on food security.
  • Collaborate and build partnerships with key campus partners (Student Health Center, Charlotte Recovery Program, Counseling and Psychological Services, Academic Associate Deans, Financial Aid Office, University Center for Academic Excellence, Development Office, Housing and Residence Life, Center for Wellness Promotion, Office of Veteran Services, International Student and Scholars Office, The Graduate School, Police and Public Safety, academic advisors, Office of Civil Rights & Title IX, etc.) to provide a comprehensive network of support for students in need.
  • Serve on Department, Division, and University program initiatives and committees.
  • Implement case management tracking methods of individuals utilizing the Jamil Niner Pantry and other basic needs
  • Assist in the development and implementation of methods to evaluate the effectiveness and success of the Jamil Niner Student Pantry.
  • Assist the Associate Dean of Students and Director of Student Assistance and Support Services with the overall management and function of the Office of Student Assistance and Support Services.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Education/Experience:

  • Master’s degree in public health, counseling, social work, higher education, or other related fields.
  • Minimum of one to three years of full-time direct experience overseeing a collegiate food pantry program.
  • Minimum of one to three years of full-time experience in basic-needs case management in a higher education setting.
  • A minimum of two to three years of postgraduate professional work experience in higher education, working with college-age students in high need experiencing psychological distress or crisis.
  • Knowledge and practices in addressing college students’ basic needs.
  • Knowledge of federal regulations regarding FERPA and the privacy of student records.
  • Ability to professionally and appropriately manage sensitive, private material and information.
  • Experience in crisis intervention, response, and assessment.

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

  • Experience supervising graduate and undergraduate students.
  • Experience with Maxient Conduct Manager Software.
  • Excellent written communication skills, as evidenced by application materials.
  • Strong skills in conflict resolution, problem-solving, and ability to analyze complex situations.
  • Familiarity with complex processes within a university (Financial Aid, Student Accounts, appeal processes, etc.).
  • Excellent interpersonal communication and organizational skills and proven ability to develop collaborative relationships among constituents.
  • Knowledge of and practical experience in coordinating university processes at a large college or university.
  • Experience with website development and maintenance.
  • Ability to multitask and manage a diverse caseload of student issues, concerns, and complaints.
  • Solution-focused approach to addressing a myriad of student concerns and care responses.
  • Demonstrates ability to work cooperatively with others in a multidisciplinary team environment.
  • Excellent judgment and experience managing confidential and sensitive information.
  • Proven ability to assist people in unbiased reflection on behavior, decision-making, and community membership.
  • Skills in using technology to track and manage individual cases and assess and report on campus trends.
  • Ability to work neutrally and work under stress.
  • Strong and effective interpersonal skills, including the ability to listen well and demonstrate sensitivity to and respect for individual student needs.
  • Exceptional critical thinking skills demonstrated by the ability to analyze information, evaluate results, and facilitate resolution of difficult challenges, including the ability to handle complex issues of extreme sensitivity.
  • Experience with Banner Student Information System.
  • Experience or knowledge working with community social services resources.
  • Organizational and computer skills to effectively maintain a tracking system.
  • A collaborative spirit of warmth, acceptance, respect for students and colleagues, and a team-oriented approach to problem-solving.

Necessary Certifications/Licenses:

A valid driver’s license. The incumbent in this position will be required to drive university owned vehicles, such as a van.
