Student Psychological Counselor (HEA) -Counseling Center **POSITION DETAILS** Lehman College is a senior college of The City University of New York (CUNY) located in theBronx. A federally-designatedHispanic Serving Institution, Lehman serves a diverse population of morethan 14,000 undergraduate and graduate students. Reporting to the Director of Counseling at LehmanCollege, this position will: -Provide time-limited psychological counseling, including intakes andassessments, to full-time and parttime day/evening students on the campus using a cultural humilityperspective and evidence basedpractices. -Perform crisis intervention for emergency situations andprovide counseling services during triage hours. -Provide Consultation Services for instructional andadministrative staff regarding students with psychological and academic difficulties. -Plan, develop,coordinate, and present outreach initiatives and workshops including preparation materials, flyers, andhandouts. -Participate in the development of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Programmingincluding Safe Zone training, as well as well as collaborate with the Director of Wellness Program andFaculty and Staff in this initiative. -Collaborate with the Urban Male Program, Herbert H. LehmanLeadership Program, Wellness Center, and other Lehman departments to develop programs aimed at maintaining psychological wellness with cultural competence. -Participate in the development oftrainingand supervision of clinical trainees, Peer Educators, and CUNY CAP. Give clinical andadministrative support to them and all staff members in Director’s absence. -Participate in Open House,Orientations, and Leadership Retreats. **QUALIFICATIONS** Education: A Doctoral degree in Psychology to include Ph.D. and Psy.D. programs is preferred or a Master's degree in an appropriate discipline for personal or psychological counseling is required. A New York State License as a mental health practitioner (social work, psychology, or mental health counseling) is also required. Experience: Five+ years of related experience in social work, psychology, or mental health counseling. To meet the supervised experience requirement as a licensed Mental Health Counselor, you must have completed at least 3,000 clock hours providing Mental Health Counseling. The supervised experience must be obtained after completion of the master’s degree program required for licensure. A Doctoral degree in Psychology to include Ph.D. and Psy.D. programs OR A Master's degree in an appropriate discipline for personal or psychological counseling and a New York State license as a mental health practitioner (social work, psychology, or mental health counseling). In addition, six years' professional experience is required for all candidates. Preferred Qualifications: - Experience and knowledge of student development and higher education systems - Excellent interpersonal skills -Knowledge of Windows based programs and other computer programs. The ability to communicate in writing is an important job-related competency. All candidates will draft a writing sample as part of the interview process to demonstrate their ability to write memos and letters that are grammatically correct. **CUNY TITLE OVERVIEW** Provides student counseling services as a member of a team. - Provides psychological counseling to individuals and groups of students - Performs crisis intervention for emergency situations - Performs intake and assessment for personal counseling services - Consults with instructional and administrative staff regarding student mental health issues; may prepare and present outreach initiatives and workshops - Participates in recommending improvements that will impact the counseling center's effectiveness - Performs related duties as assigned. On the graduate level, the College has developed professional programs in nursing, teacher and counselor preparation, accounting, computer science, health services, and speech-language pathology. The College also offers strong traditional liberal arts graduate programs in art, biology, English, history, Spanish and mathematics.

For more than two decades, Lehman has deepened its involvement with the surrounding community. The opening of the Lehman Center for the Performing Arts in 1980 and the Lehman College Art Gallery in 1984 has made the College a cultural center for the region. Together with the City and the Humanities Program, the Department of Music, and the Theatre program, they present dozens of concerts, plays, dance performances, and exhibitions that are free or nominally priced.

Lehman College also provides a variety of community services. The Institute for Literacy Studies sponsors classes to teach adults fundamentals of reading and writing, while the Speech and Hearing Center offers comprehensive evaluations of hearing and speech-language disorders.

Lehman has joined with the Bronx Superintendent of Schools’ Office and the educational reform organization New Visions for Public Schools to develop seven new small high schools in the Bronx. The schools—housed within larger, traditional high schools—are formed around the themes of the visual arts, teaching, music, college readiness, health sciences, nursing and allied health, and community research and learning.

In addition, in Fall 2003, the High School of American Studies at Lehman College opened on the Lehman campus. One of New York City’s new specialized high schools and the only one to focus on American history, the school represents a collaboration among Lehman College, the New York City Department of Education, and the Gilder-Lehrman Foundation.
