Vice President and Chief Learning Officer


WASC Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC) exists to promote success for all students through effective institutions. The Vice President-Chief Learning Officer (VP-CLO) will guide professional training to support all aspects of the accreditation review process and design the agency’s comprehensive educational programming activities, including a broad and innovative range of educational workshops, leadership seminars, the Accreditation Leadership Academy, the Accreditation Resource Conference (ARC), and other learning experiences.


The VP-CLO conceives new models; assesses and continually improves training and educational programming effectiveness; provides direct support to institutions as their liaison to WSCUC; supports agency policy formation, review, and revision; manages designated partnership projects, external relationships, and grant-related projects; and supports the work of and assists with capacity-building activities of the Commission. As a member of the senior leadership team, the VP-CLO collaborates with senior staff to plan strategically for and implement organizational initiatives.


Responsibilities: The primary areas of responsibility are as follows:
• Accreditation Content and Process Training
   o Develop and execute WSCUC’s learning activities to support all actors and roles in the accreditation process and             institutional reviews, including leading the design of training for institutions, Commission, and staff on the meaning        and achievement of accreditation standards
• Leadership and Development of Comprehensive Educational Programs
  o Lead the design and implementation of the annual Accreditation Resource Conference and promote engagement of       WSCUC membership and other colleagues
  o Guide planning for and implementation of the Accreditation Leadership Academy and continue to build capacity and       leadership across the field
  o Oversee planning for and implementation of a collection of educational workshops each year, including selecting              and mentoring facilitators, preparing materials, ensuring participant engagement through workshop design, and              supervising event coordination
   o Communicate the educational activities available to institutions and their personnel in collaboration with WSCUC’s           Communications Director
    o Manage educational programming staff
• Evaluation of Program Effectiveness
  o Understand needs and interests of multiple audiences
  o Evaluate program effectiveness and foster continuous improvement
• Institutional Support: The VP-CLO works with a small number of assigned institutions to provide support during the institutional review process, including site visits. The VP-CLO also works with institutions on matters relating to substantive change, such as new programs, off-campus sites, and online offerings.

• Commission Support: Working with the Chair and CEO, support the Commission’s own learning objectives and internal programming.
• In-house Professional Development: Lead the development of internal learning programming, including staff retreats.


Qualifications: The following are expected qualifications:
• Substantial experience in higher education at a senior administrative or faculty level
• Experience in accreditation matters, preferably as an Accreditation Liaison Officer and/or peer reviewer
• Ability to design and implement highly effective educational, conference, and other convening activities to support participants’ engagement and learning
• Ability to work with a varied group of institutions in terms of size and mission
• Ability to analyze institutional functioning in a spirit of improvement
• Familiarity with concepts and activities related to learning, assessment, institutional effectiveness, and organizational learning
• Excellent presentation, facilitation, and written and oral communication skills
• Demonstrated record of commitment to success for all students; innovation and creativity; and quality and quality improvement based on evidence
• Exhibits collaborative inquiry and planning; integrity; flexibility; and a passion for learning
• Earned doctorate or equivalent combination of experience and education

Salary and Benefits: The salary range is $160,000-$185,000. Benefits include medical, dental, vision, generous retirement, supplemental disability, and vacation. No waiting period for benefits except minimums set by providers.
