ECU’s Department of Biology (http:/// is home to more than 1,400 undergraduate majors (BS and BA in Biology and BS in Biochemistry) and instructs more than 17,000 students each academic year. Faculty in the department are committed to providing high-impact training in research to undergraduate, Masters ( and Doctoral-level ( students. The Department of Biology is broad in its representation of different biological subdisciplines and emphasizes integrative approaches drawing from across the natural sciences. Faculty and students in the Department of Biology have ample opportunity to collaborate with others across campus, including those within the Brody School of Medicine, College of Arts and Sciences, and College of Education. Discipline based education researchers for the sciences can be found in the Departments of Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

The Biology Department and its research facilities (Microscopy, Genomics, and a vivarium) are primarily housed in the new Life Science and Biotechnology Building, a gateway to a growing, vibrant downtown district in the coastal region of North Carolina. Biology also has teaching labs located in Science and Technology (Introductory Biology), Flanagan (Microbiology and Anatomy), and Howell Science Complex. Howell Sciences Complex, currently under renovation, will contain teaching laboratories for upper-level biology courses. ECU has a variety of other cutting-edge resources available in support of its innovation-focused research mission including an integrative genomic core (Brody SOM) mass spectrometry, flow cytometry, and advanced imaging. The Department of Biology receives funds which support the inclusion of undergraduate learning assistants in introductory problem-based learning lecture courses. ECU’s Office for Faculty Excellence also provides opportunities for faculty to participate in and lead professional development type activities.

Job Duties :

The Department of Biology at East Carolina University ( seeks to fill a fixed-term faculty position (9-month appointment) at the Teaching Assistant Professor level.

The successful candidate will be expected to contribute substantially to the instruction of Principles of Biology 1, a freshman course in biology that is required of all biology majors. This particular course introduces molecular biology, bioenergetics, cell structure and physiology, the molecular basis of inheritance, and gene expression. We are seeking individuals who can effectively teach this course in a problem-based/ active learning format. The selected candidate would also contribute to the instruction of a writing intensive course on Science Communication and an upper-level course, appropriate for the level of expertise of the selected candidate. We have a full-time staff member who preps the lab and graduate teaching assistants teach different sections of the Principles of Biology 1 lab. The selected candidate will be expected to lead oversight of the Principles of Biology 1 lab curriculum and for ensuring that teaching assistants are trained appropriately.

Successful candidates will become a part of a collegial, interdisciplinary Biology Department and will be expected to contribute to advising and service at the departmental, college, and/or university level. This position begins in August 2024, with the possibility of subsequent renewal and advancement in title. The successful applicant will contribute to the instruction of the equivalent of four courses during each of the fall and spring semesters.

Minimum Education/Experience :

A Ph.D. in Biology or a closely related field (including but not limited to Microbiology, Cellular Biology, Immunology or Molecular Biology). Qualifying degrees must be received at the time of consideration from accredited institutions.

License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation :


Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education :

Prefer applicants with experience in problem-based/active learning classroom teaching. We are open to applicants with expertise from any biological subdiscipline but would prefer someone who has training and/or research experience in the area of immunology.
