Other Conditions: To begin on or after September 2024. Positions will be funded 60% with State funds with the balance from extramural funding. The extramural balance of 40% will be provided by the Institute for a minimum of two years.

Natural Energy Institute (HNEI) is informed by aloha ‘aina, the recognition, commitment, and practice sustaining the ea – or life breath – between people and our natural environments that resulted in nearly 100 generations of sustainable care for Hawai‘i. Projects relating to transforming Hawai‘i, the nation, and the world to a low-carbon economy are consistent with the principles and practice of aloha ‘aina.  In meeting its mission to transform Hawai‘i’s energy systems, HNEI engages the University’s student body and works closely with agencies and energy stakeholders throughout the state and beyond. HNEI is committed to support an equitable energy  transformation through promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion. In keeping with this mission, HNEI seeks applicants for two tenure-track faculty positions (one Assistant Researcher and one Associate or Full Researcher) to take lead roles in carbon reduction energy transformation of Hawai‘i and the nation.
 
Duties and Responsibilities:
-    Establish, manage, and conduct a research program that will actively support Hawai‘i’s
     transition to a clean, decarbonized, and resilient energy future across one of the energy
     sectors (e.g. electricity, transportation, and end-users). Results of this research would be
     expected to inform energy, carbon, and climate-change policies and regulations.
-    Analyze impacts (e.g. technical, economic, environmental, and cultural) of energy
     infrastructure transformation to meet decarbonization goals and inform resilient energy
     system solutions.
-    Consistent with the area of focus, demonstrate responsiveness to the needs of the state
     and actively support the coordination of HNEI activities across Hawai‘i stakeholders.
     Support coordination of HNEI interactions with federal agencies, national laboratories,
     NGOs, international partners, and/or state government
-    Alone or in collaboration with faculty members from various UHM units (e.g., SOEST,
     Economics, Engineering, Urban and Regional Planning, Law, and Hawai‘inuiakea School
     of Hawaiian Knowledge), develop proposals relevant to state, national and international
     energy needs. Identify, procure, and manage resources needed to meet specific
     program goals. Hire and supervise students and staff to meet objectives.
-    Develop and execute an education/outreach program for energy stakeholders, including
     the general public through community service, and support informed energy policy and
     regulatory decision making.
-    Address critical workforce needs in Hawai‘i and globally by actively participating in the
     UHM educational mission which may include teaching, coordination of course
     development with other UHM faculty members, and mentoring of students, visiting
     scholars, and professional staff.
-    Disseminate results of professional activities in peer reviewed publications, conference
     proceedings, and reports and other formats as appropriate.
-    Perform other duties as required.
 
Minimum Qualifications:
 
Assistant Researcher
-    Ph.D. from an accredited university of recognized standing in engineering, economics,
     policy, or other relevant discipline.
-    Demonstrated evidence of excellent oral and written communication skills, and the
     ability to work collaboratively with institutional colleagues, industry, public stakeholders,
     and/or government agencies.
-    Demonstrated excellence in:
      *    scientific and scholarly activities as evidenced by publication of peer-reviewed
           journal articles or other significant written work products;
      *   research outputs related to energy systems, regulatory analysis, or energy policy;
      *   participating in regional/national research groups or societies.
-    Demonstrated ability to plan and organize independent, substantive energy research
     projects.

Successful candidates shall have professional experience conducting research relevant to
the goals of the position, including but not limited to energy systems; energy resilience or
energy infrastructure transformation.

Associate Researcher
In addition to the minimum qualifications for Assistant Researcher as stated above:
-    Successful candidates shall have four or more years of post-Ph.D. professional
     experience securing funding and conducting and managing an active research program
     relevant to the goals of the position, including but not limited to energy systems; energy
     resilience or energy infrastructure transformation.

Full Researcher
In addition to the minimum qualifications for Assistant Researcher as stated above:
-    Eight or more years of post-Ph.D. professional experience securing funding and
     conducting and managing an active research program relevant to the goals of the
     position, including but not limited to energy systems; energy resilience or energy
     infrastructure transformation.
-    Research productivity which has resulted in significant recognition by the national or
     international community of scholars active in the field.
 
Desirable Qualifications:
-    Demonstrated participation in programs intended to inform energy, carbon, and climate-
     change policies and regulations.
-    Demonstrated ability to plan and organize the work of subordinates.  
-    Demonstrated experience working with federal or state governmental agencies in the
     energy sector.
-    Experience in coordinating activities across broad groups of energy stakeholders.  
-    Substantial knowledge of relevant federal agencies, their organization and funding
     programs.
-    Working knowledge of Hawai‘i clean energy initiatives and current energy situation.
