The School of Theatre Arts at Illinois Wesleyan University invites applications for a two-year full time visitor appointment at the Assistant Professor level (continuation subject to annual performance reviews, with the potential for renewal). Nine month contract for two years at a salary commensurate with qualifications and experience. Effective start date is August 15, 2024. We are seeking candidates with breadth of knowledge, familiarity with the speed of theatrical production, facility for collaboration and ability to pass on skills and knowledge to our students. Candidates must possess an MFA at the time of appointment. Experience in higher education is desired. The successful candidate will also be able to demonstrate continued artistic and professional development in the field.

This position combines teaching and production responsibilities. Teaching can be in rotation: beginning costume technology, costume crafts, costume design, costume and fashion history, stage makeup, hair/wigs design, visual concepts, rendering, drawing for the theatre, and fundamentals of design. Design responsibilities include: designing or supervising student designers for our Mainstage or Laboratory season (up to a total of six productions), facilitating guest artist designers as needed, and shared supervision of undergraduate students enrolled in Theatre Laboratory. Independent study courses and special topics courses connected to student designers and their projects will be part of this appointment’s design responsibilities.

The School of Theatre Arts seeks candidates whose artistic achievement, teaching, and service has prepared them to contribute to our commitment to diversity and inclusion in higher education. Diversity in our environment embraces the acceptance of a multiplicity of diverse backgrounds and worldviews. We translate these values into action by seeking individuals who have experience and expertise working with diverse students, colleagues, and constituencies. We believe that such experiences are both institutional and service imperatives. We encourage applications from individuals with demonstrated knowledge of and relevant abilities working with diverse communities.

All applications should be sent electronically. Please include in your cover letter a statement describing your perspectives on and, preferably, experience with promoting inclusion; curriculum vita; graduate school transcripts; three letters of reference; and portfolio or website address by March 1, 2024:  Anna Corvera, Chair-Search Committee, School of Theatre Arts, Illinois Wesleyan University, Bloomington, IL 61702-2900.
