Assistant or Associate Professor, Neuropsychology


The Department of Psychology in the College of Arts and Sciences invites applications for a tenure-track position that begins Fall 2024.


Our department offers didactic and research training in neuropsychology at the doctoral level. This program provides students with a scientific understanding of human behavior as it relates to normal and abnormal functioning of the central nervous system. It also introduces students to a wide range of procedures and techniques used to study the neural bases of cognitive, affective, motivational, and behavioral processes.  This program focuses on the dynamic interplay between the brain and physical health, especially as this relationship is brought to bear on issues related to racial and ethnic health disparities.  The goal of our program is to equip students for research careers as neuropsychologists in academic and research settings. In past years, members of our faculty have engaged in research collaborations with faculty in the Departments of Psychiatry, Neurology, Genetics, Biology, Neurosurgery, Pharmacology, Surgery (Bariatric and Transplant), and Communication Science and Disorders. We seek outstanding applicants with a demonstrated track record of excellence in research and teaching. Successful candidates are expected to develop vigorous, extramurally funded research programs in their areas of expertise, publish in scholarly journals, actively participate in the Department's teaching and curriculum development at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and mentor undergraduate and graduate students. Evidence of interest and success in mentoring underrepresented students is highly desired.

The Department of Psychology currently consists of 15 faculty members. The Clinical Psychology PhD program is the nation’s first APA accredited program at a historically Black university. The Department also offers doctoral programs in Neuropsychology, Developmental Psychology, and Social Psychology. Collectively these programs provide unique opportunities for research collaborations that align with the mission of Howard to identify innovative solutions to human problems in the United States and throughout the world.


Required Qualifications:


Candidates who are expected to have a Ph.D. by August 16, 2024, will be considered.

  • Earned doctorate in Neuropsychology or a closely related behavioral neuroscience field;
  • Record of scholarship, teaching, and professional service commensurate with the rank of tenure-track assistant professor or tenure-track associate professor;
  • Effective communication and organizational skills; and
  • Evidence of successful grant writing experience or potential for securing extramural funding.
