Job Details

Drew University seeks applications for the Director of the Center for Academic Excellence (CAE) who will foster a student-centered learning environment that promotes collaboration, academic success, professional and personal growth, and overall well-being. The Director will be responsible for oversight, management, development, and successful implementation of all academic support resources and programs provided by the CAE. These resources include subject tutoring, writing support, academic coaching, and other types of programming that are provided to students. The successful candidate will lead a team of CAE employees, including a staff Tutor Coordinator and approximately 80 graduate and undergraduate student employees (i.e., tutors, writing specialists, academic coaches, and administrative assistants). The Director also works collaboratively with support staff outside the CAE, faculty, department chairs, and deans to monitor student outcomes and provide necessary academic support aimed at increasing retention and completion rates.

This is a full-time, 12-month, in-person position reporting to the Associate Provost.

The Director's responsibilities include: 

Develop and implement academic support programming and coordinate academic support resources to support students’ academic success. The Director will work collaboratively with other academic support staff and faculty (including those working in STEM and Writing disciplines) to develop content-specific resources, including embedded tutoring and other specialized supplemental instruction programming.

Act as a liaison between tutors, students, and faculty to ensure effective operations of the CAE. The Director utilizes Drew’s early alert system to help ensure that at-risk students are receiving appropriate academic support interventions.

Manage the CAE’s online scheduling platform and develop and maintain systems for tracking tutor schedules and assessing tutoring sessions; oversee the collection and analysis of data to evaluate the utilization and effectiveness of academic support resources; identify strengths and areas for innovation and improvement; and prepare reports and presentations summarizing outcomes and recommendations.

Promote the CAE’s academic support resources to students, faculty, and staff through various communication channels. 

Coordinate and implement required training for student and staff employees, focusing on best practices, effective communication, and the specialized skills associated with one-on-one tutoring, group sessions, and other support formats.

Maintain College Reading & Learning Association (CRLA) certification for staff training and provide ongoing professional development opportunities for CAE student staff to enhance their knowledge and skills.

Manage the recruitment, hiring, and evaluation of student staff. 

Manage the CAE’s administrative functions, which include budget management and payroll for student employees, scheduling of individual and group support sessions, maintenance of the CAE website, and marketing and social media communications.

      Required Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree with a minimum of three years experience coordinating tutoring or academic support programs in a higher education setting or in a learning center administration. Master's degree (MA) preferred.  

Demonstrated knowledge of adult learning theory, concepts, and teaching methodology.

Desired Knowledge, Skills and Qualities:

Understanding of the needs and challenges of a diverse student population, including but not limited to first-generation students and students with disabilities.

Knowledge of best practices for high quality academic support and learning strategies across different disciplines, including STEM-related areas and Writing. 

Experience in training, supervising and mentoring tutoring staff in a variety of academic and program areas, including STEM-related areas and Writing.

Clear knowledge of study skills and the ability to promote this knowledge across content.

Experience implementing  academic support technologies, scheduling platforms, and other tools to deliver and manage tutoring and instructional support. 

Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to establish rapport with students, faculty and staff.

Experience working in a fast-paced environment

Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.

Proficiency in data collection, analysis and reporting and Google suite programs.

Ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.

Flexible schedule to accommodate occasional evening and/or weekend programming.
